Steve Omischl (born November 16, 1978 in North Bay , Ontario ) is a Canadian freestyle skier . He specializes in the aerials (jumping) discipline. As a world champion and two-time overall World Cup winner, he is one of the world's most successful athletes.
Career
Omischl started freestyle jumping at the age of 15. He made his debut in the Freestyle Skiing World Cup on December 4, 1999 in Whistler , where he immediately jumped to second place. With four more top 10 results in the 1999/2000 season, he established himself at the top of the world and received the Rookie of the Year award from the FIS World Ski Association . In the 2000/01 season he reached several podiums, but a win was missing, as well as in the 2001/02 season. He finished the 2001 World Cup in seventh and the 2002 Winter Olympics in eleventh. On September 8, 2002, Omischl achieved his first victory in a World Cup competition in Mount Buller, Australia , another victory followed at the end of the 2002/03 season, which was enough for 2nd place in the discipline ranking. At the 2003 World Championships in Deer Valley , he won a bronze medal.
Omischl dominated the 2003/04 season almost at will: he won six of twelve World Cup competitions and came second three times. With that he not only won the discipline ranking, but also became the overall World Cup winner. In the 2004/05 season Omischl was able to win a world cup competition, and he also won the gold medal at the 2005 World Championships in Ruka . At the Canadian Championships this year he was the first athlete in the world to perform a triple backflip with four screws (full-full-double full).
At the 2006 Winter Olympics , Omischl could not withstand the high pressure of expectations; in the qualification he was only 20th and thus clearly missed the final of the top twelve. Ten days later, he rehabilitated with another World Cup victory. He achieved two more World Cup victories in the 2006/07 season, which in turn was enough for victory in the discipline classification. In addition, he won the bronze medal at the 2007 World Cup in Madonna di Campiglio . Like four years before, Omischl was hard to beat in the 2007/08 season. He won six of the nine World Cup competitions, and came second and third. As a result, he secured the discipline ranking and the overall World Cup by a large margin.
In the 2008/09 season Omischl was able to win two World Cup competitions, at the 2009 World Cup in Inawashiro he had to admit defeat to the American Ryan St. Onge and won the silver medal.
Omischl is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right To Play .
