geography

location

Struthütten is located in the foothills of the Westerwald low mountain range in the southwest of Siegerland . Located in the middle of the Heller Valley, Mahlscheid, the highest mountain in the area, is 509.3  m high in the south of the village . In the north is the 427.5  m high Altenberg and the 454.6  m high Schiffenberg . The place itself is at an altitude of about 240-300 m. The Heller flows through it , into which the Herzbach , coming from the Kunstertal , flows in the middle of Struthütten . This valley is about 3 km long and runs slightly northeast. It meets the Dermbachtal roughly on the border with Herdorf . The Dermbach flows into the Herzbach in Struthütten about 30 m from the Heller . Structurally, the place is only slightly fused with Neunkirchen itself, in contrast to the other parts of the municipality, but with Herdorf.

Neighboring places

Neighboring places are Niederschelderhütte and Niederschelden in the north, Eiserfeld in the northeast, Neunkirchen and Altenseelbach in the east, Daaden in the south, Herdorf in the southwest and west and Dermbach in the northwest.

history

Old Heller Bridge

In 1419 Count Gerhard I. zu Sayn acquired a farm with the right "on the water passage uff the Struethutte". The current spelling "Struthütten" was first mentioned in 1605.

On September 8, 1748, the first village school was set up in Struthütten. In 1815, Struthütten became Prussian and so half went into the mayor's offices of Neunkirchen and Burbach. The mayor's office in Neunkirchen , renamed to office, was dissolved as early as 1844. In August 1847 and on September 25, 1860 there were major fires in the village that destroyed large parts of Struthütten. In the latter fire, eight houses and a grinding mill were destroyed. From 1907 the Free Grunder Eisenbahn connected Herdorf with Wilden , and a stop was set up in Struthütten. In addition, since 1864 a narrow-gauge railway connected the huts and pits in the Kunstertal with the Herdorf train station.

On August 18, 1906, the Struthütten volunteer fire brigade was founded. In 1934 this became part of the new official fire brigade of the Burbach office, in 1969 it finally became the Struthütten fire engine of the Neunkirchen fire brigade. In 1907 a school and a new Hellerbrücke were built in the village. The old bridge from 1860 was replaced, like the old school from 1862. In 1905 a gymnasium was inaugurated.

In 1925, the Struthütten community made a living from the basalt industry by building on the Mahlscheid, after the Kunst mine was closed that year. Of the 1259 inhabitants, 1106 were Protestant, 15 Catholic and 138 of other denominations. Facilities included an elementary school, a post office and a sports field. In 1934 the bakery, built around 1800, was demolished.

On March 19, 1945, Neunkirchen was badly damaged by an Allied bombing raid, followed by the American invasion of Struthütten from Herdorf on March 29. 92 men from Stuthütten died between 1939 and 1945, 26 of them are missing. Another 18 people had died as a result of the war by 1961.

Until the municipal reorganization on January 1, 1969, the place belonged to the office of Burbach .

Business

Between 1616 and 1925 there was a mill in the Kunstertal . This was shut down with the art pit . A second mill was built in the village around 1740. This initially belonged to the Counts of Sayn, but was operated between 1777 and 1844 by the Struthütten community itself. Then it came into the possession of the mining and smelting works Karl Nickel. It burned down in 1860. After the rebuilt mill was operated as a rubber mill in the 1950s, it ceased operations in 1969 after a fire. An oil mill is mentioned in a statistic from 1777.

The copper smelter in Struthütten was first mentioned in 1579. It must have been received before 1716, as a new hut was built between 1716 and 1719. This was "not operated for a long time" in 1810, but was mentioned again in 1812. The Seelenberg Hütte was mentioned in 1587; it was shut down in 1901 after the blast furnace exploded. The ironworks existed since around 1790 and passed to Friedrich and Ferdinand Schneider in the 1840s, in 1858 it was no longer mentioned when considering the merger of all Freie Grunder iron and steel works. The Schreiber copper smelter was built in 1837, and from 1883 copper was extracted using an electrolytic process. However, this department was relocated to Buchhellertal near Burbach in 1900 . In 1926 the hut was closed.

Mining

From 1730 the mining in the Kunstertal can be proven. The Kunst mine mined copper ore until around 1800. Later, however, they switched to the more coveted and more available iron ore. Until the mine was closed on September 29, 1925, the mine produced 316,810 t of iron ore from a depth of up to 600 m.

The Altenberg mine had existed since at least 1812 and was closed in 1940. In 1936 a 200 m deep test shaft was sunk. The Dachs mine produced 1821 t of iron ore in 1885 and was opened by the Dachser Erbstollen , which was excavated in 1862 and had a length of 658 m. The Dreckberger tunnel was excavated in 1842 and provided with a 210 m deep blind shaft in 1872.

religion

Struthütten does not belong to the Neunkirchen parish like the other Neunkirchen parish, but to Herdorf and thus to the Rhenish instead of the Westphalian church. However, this has only existed since 1582, after the place was separated from Neunkirchen and parish was added to Daaden. The parish of Herdorf-Struthütten has only existed independently since 1886.

The “Silbersee” on the Mahlscheid was formed after the demolition work on the basalt head stopped. The basalt head and the lake are now surrounded by the Mahlscheid nature reserve , which has existed on the North Rhine-Westphalian side since 1990 and is 26 hectares in size.

The Kreuzeichen am Eichert north of the village is an approximately 135 year old border mark with a trunk circumference of 2.20 m, in the place of which there was a tree around 1600. The imperial oak was planted in 1871 in honor of King or Kaiser Wilhelm I of Prussia. The tree stands in the middle of Struthütten and has a trunk circumference of 3.20 m.

The church community Neunkirchen operates a kindergarten in Struthütten, although the place itself belongs to the community of Herdorf-Struthütten . Next to the church there is a Christian assembly and an evangelical community in town.

There is a shooting range in the village and, together with Altenseelbach, a sports field. In addition to a barbecue area in the Kunstertal , the valley is ideal for hiking and walking. In addition, the multi-purpose hall was ceremoniously handed over on May 27, 1963. This is used for celebrations and events and has a large hall with 311 m² for 260 to 390 seats and a small hall with 123 m² for 150 seats.
