Subductive Measures ZBO - SdM 052004 is an art project for the 50th anniversary of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict in 2004, in which 50 containers with contemporary works of art were stored for 1500 years.

The project

Under the initiator and curator Adalbert Hoesle , 50 contemporary artists were asked to donate a work of art each. These were then stored in 50 sealed containers in the Barbarastollen , the central salvage site of the Federal Republic of Germany (ZBO), which may only be viewed in 1500 years, i.e. in 3504. The containers are listed in the International Register of UNESCO . The protective text reads: "Declared a cultural asset by definition and through the act of conditioning, in future they will be subject to the special protection of the Hague Convention after being stored in the ZBO."

The work created for the project should be based on the topics of "core drilling" and "cross-punching" and had to fit into the storage containers. These have an external height of 64 cm, an internal height of 60 cm and an internal diameter of 27 cm. They are made of V2A stainless steel, have a copper sealing ring and are closed with 16 screws.

The works were collected from the artists between March 29 and the end of April and stored in the containers under the supervision of a notary. The 50 sealed stainless steel containers were shown from May 14th to May 16th in the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn and stored in the gallery on July 21st, 2004. From July 16 to 18, 2004, a symposium was held at Kronburg Castle in Memmingen on this campaign entitled The Swallowing in the Barbarastollen with 20 invited guests.
