Table of contents

At sunrise five people with completely different characters appear on a skyscraper roof to jump to their deaths together. They don't know about each other. Their only thing in common is the planned suicide together. However, a nonsensical chain of events forces them to postpone their plan until evening and to stay on the roof. In this way, disconnected from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and city life, they develop a previously unimaginable sense of community and spend an unforgettable day together. The idea of the film is based on the novel A Long Way Down by the British writer Nick Hornby .

Reviews

“Inadvertently, 'Suicide Club' proves that black humor and touching sympathy are two absolutely suitable models for facing the worst, but they don't get along well. That Nick Hornby's hit novel 'A Long Way Down' approached the same idea years ago doesn't really help either. "

- Fluter / magazine of the Federal Agency for Civic Education

“The story is reminiscent of Nick Hornby's hit novel 'A Long Way Down', but it was implemented much more awkwardly. Five people, who have never seen each other before, meet on the roof of a skyscraper to jump to their deaths together. The awkwardly developed story and the bumpy dialogues make this suicide attempt an extremely tough affair. Conclusion: Five losers are rediscovering life: boring feature film debut. "

“It could be one of those American high-concept movies whose script can be summed up in one sentence. (...) That sounds like great drama or black humor. But above all it is damn ambitious for a feature film debut. "

- by Sabine Horst / epd Film 12/10

“The wonderful mixture of blues and fun, refined with atmospheric and soulful music, conveys the value of togetherness and friendship in a completely non-didactic way. It's thoughtful, touchingly personal and yet always remains relaxed. A homage to life. "

- KINO.DE

“Optical anti-depressant: Martin Saumer, who wrote the script together with his director brother Olaf, has come up with a number of entanglements. Above all, the humorous aspects that he takes from the subject reveal a sensitive look at the curiosities that life brings to light, especially in its most tragic moments. "

- KINO-ZEIT.DE

“A genre mix of drama and comedy. In his film, Saumer combines these opposites into a unity. He does this with verve, humor and entertainment. The seriousness towards the topic is not lost. Good actors create a diversity of characters that is captivating. And the genre mix turns out to be clever. You don't leave the cinema depressed, but full of joie de vivre. "

“Touching moments and a clever script. The story of five people who want to jump from one roof to their death together has many touching moments and a clever script [...] "

- from FILMDIENST 4/2010

“[…] Olaf Saumer and his brother Martin have created a wonderful 90-minute homage to life that is touching, that leaves you with a laughing and a crying eye. Also thanks to the excellent performance of the acting team. Great cinema despite the 'low budget'. "

- Hessian / Lower Saxony general

“An extraordinary film! Only in the course of the film do the characters reveal their different, bizarre personalities. Serious and funny moments are balanced. An extraordinary film that vividly shows the viewer the value of life and friendship. "

- BZ

“Thanks to the good template full of surprising twists and turns and a first-class cast, the film manages the difficult tightrope walk between tragedy and comedy when it comes to the inherently sensitive issue of suicide risk. The deliberate mixing of classic drama and black humor may take some getting used to for German film, because such serious topics have rarely been coupled with a clear entertainment value. But in this case the experiment succeeded (...) "

- Top video news

“Too long, too implausible debates about the meaning of life, too much false comfort. [For this] a lot was visually extracted from the limited resources. "

- Philipp Bühler : Berliner Zeitung

Production notes

The film is a low-budget production (50,000 EUR) and was almost entirely self-financed. The Hessian Film Funding supported the film financially (5,000 euros) and the Hessian Broadcasting Studio Kassel and the Kassel Art School provided technical equipment. The idea for this feature film came up in 1999 when Olaf Saumer read an article about Japanese teenagers who had anonymously agreed to commit suicide together over the Internet. Olaf Saumer wrote the script together with his brother Martin Saumer. In addition to directing, producing and co-writing the film, he is also responsible for editing the film. The entire team, including the actors, worked on reserve for this film . The film distribution company Kinostar GmbH from Stuttgart brought the film to German cinemas on November 25, 2010. The DVD has been in stores since June 24, 2011. After the theatrical release, the TV rights were sold to SWR / SR and ARTE. The TV premiere was on February 29, 2012 on SWR / SR. Further broadcasts took place on April 26, 2013 and September 12, 2014.
