Location of Sunnyside in Yakima County

Sunnyside is a city ( City ) in Yakima County in the State of Washington . At the United States Census 2010 Sunnyside had 15,858 residents.

history

Listed barn in Sunnyside

1 for recognition as a small town (: on 16 September 1902, the residents voted in a ratio of 42 Town ). Under state law, a small town had to have at least 300 residents to be recognized as such. With a population of 314, Sunnyside fell into this category at the time.

The first mayor of Sunnyside was the pharmacist James Henderson.

The settlement was founded in 1893 by Walter N. Granger. The name "Sunnyside" was coined by a trader called WH Cline. Granger was involved in the financing and construction of the Sunnyside Canal, which was to serve to irrigate the area through the Yakima River . However, due to the stock market crash of 1893 , Granger's loans were canceled and the city's population shrank to seven families. By the end of 1901, the population had doubled again and finally reached 300 people. The location included "a bank, eleven shops, three hotels, a newspaper, two blacksmiths, two dance halls, three churches and a large, growing school".

The population growth in Sunnyside was stimulated at that time by the immigration of Dunkards , members of an Anabaptist congregation from South Dakota. Such was the number of these dunkards that in 1902 it was reported that they had "built a spacious place for worship in Sunnyside," which was the largest church in Yakima County at the time.

The Dunkards , members of the German Baptist Progressive Brethren , moved to Sunnyside to set up what they called the Christian Cooperative Colony . The Anabaptists bought up the entire city and were the founders of the first bank and a telephone network. They enforced regulations banning alcohol, dancing, and gambling as a condition of the sale of each parcel. This is why the city is depicted with a cross or halo symbol on old Washington maps.

Later, in the 1930s, refugees from the Dust Bowl also moved to Sunnyside.

Under the leadership of Mayor William Bright "Billy" Cloud (1870-1959) on June 5, 1917 in Sunnyside, a project to pave the dirty roads was decided. This project had become necessary because over the years of irrigation, the water table had risen so much that the streets had become unbearably muddy. The total cost was US $ 62,629.45.

In 1948 Sunnyside was the first city in Washington to implement a form of legislature called a council manager . This form consists of an elected city council, which is responsible for political decisions, and a full-time city manager , who is appointed by the city council and is responsible for the administration. The city administrator offers political advice, runs the day-to-day business of the city administration, processes personnel issues (including the hiring and firing of employees) and is responsible for drawing up the budget. The council manager statutes prohibit the city council from interfering in the administration of the manager. The City Manager, in turn, can be appointed or dismissed directly at any time by a majority vote by the city council.

Sunnyside received the All-America City award in 1979 , which is given annually to ten cities in the USA for jointly mastering great challenges and achieving unusual results.

geography

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 17.17 km², which does not include water.

Sunnyside is about 295 km east of Seattle, west of Spokane and northeast of Portland.

climate

According to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification, Sunnyside has a cold winter desert climate (abbreviated to "BWk").

It usually takes place in early December; the parade includes "agricultural implements such as combine harvesters, trucks, sprayers, grape harvesters and all types of tractors", which are decorated with colorful lights. Sunnyside Historical Museum

Located in downtown Sunnyside, the museum houses and displays artifacts and documents with a focus on the early days of Sunnyside. The museum building was donated to the city by Robert and Martha McIntosh, who bought the business from the Walter C. Ball & Sons family, local entrepreneurs. Both the McIntoshs and the Balls were among the founding pioneers of Sunnyside. The Sunnyside Memorial Cemetery , established by the Ball family, is north of town. The secluded property was designed by Percy Ball to resemble Chingford Church in Walthamstow, England, where Walter C. Ball and his wife Amelia grew up together. The building was used for cremation until it fell into disrepair. The graves of the Ball family are on the east side of the site.

legislative branch

In Sunnyside, the legislature consists of a council manager construct (elected city councilor for political decisions and city manager appointed by the latter for administration). In 2013 Donald Day was appointed City Manager ; the city council includes Julia Hart as mayor (elected in 2018) and Francisco Guerrero as deputy mayor (elected in 2018).

education

Many of the original school buildings in Sunnyside and the immediately northwestern town of Outlook either burned to the ground or were demolished for larger, better-equipped buildings. One of the original structures that are still in use is the Lincoln School at the intersection of Lincoln Street and Sixth St. The two-story building with a gymnasium attached to the east wing was built in 1927. In 1928 female teachers were prohibited from marrying. Her apprenticeship contract was terminated upon marriage.

The land on which the Lincoln School is located was donated to the school district in 1926 by H. Lloyd Miller. He and his wife also donated the neighboring property between the school and 9th Avenue as a sports area for the students. The Lincoln School is still one of the oldest buildings in the school district. It was rebuilt and renovated to accommodate the school district administration offices. The building also contains rooms for kindergarten groups.
