Petar Svačić (also Snačić ; †  1097 ) was the king of the Croatians from 1093 until his death . He probably came from the Kačić house. Petar Svačić was the last ruler of the medieval Croatian kingdom with an ethnic Croatian origin .

Life

Petar Svačić was crowned in 1093 . His residence was in the fortress of Knin . He succeeded in militarily defeating the Hungarian King Álmos, who ruled Slavonia from 1091 to 1095 .

The King of Hungary Koloman took to the field as the successor to Ladislaus I against Petar Svačić. In May 1097, Petar Svačić was killed in the Battle of Gvozd . Since then the area has been called Petrova gora (Peter Mountains).

Others

The Croatian composer Josip Mandić wrote the opera "Petar Svačić" in 1903.

The Austro-Croatian writer Paula von Preradovic , creator of the Austrian hymn, wrote the following verses about Petar Svačić in her royal legend in 1950 : “The Kačić are a mighty and wild tribe. They ruled the seas, and it was difficult to withstand their anger. But the Hungarians had come, as treacherous as a wind bride. […] In the forest ravine lie a thousand dead, silent in blood, a thousand and one more, Peter, king of the Kačić tribe, Peter, last king of the Croatians. "
