Synecdoche, New York is an American tragicomedy from the year 2008 . Directed for the first time by Charlie Kaufman , who also wrote the script and co-produced the film.
action
The hypochondriac theater director Caden Cotard is married with a four year old daughter. After the premiere of his interpretation of the play Death of a Salesman in his hometown of Schenectady , he learns that he may have problems with his nervous system. His wife Adele moves to Berlin with their daughter to present an exhibition of their miniature pictures. It turns out, however, that even after a long time it does not return. Cotard then enters into a love affair with the befriended ticket seller Hazel.
By being honored as a MacArthur Fellow , which is associated with high prize money, Cotard feels motivated to create a new, great and true play that is supposed to depict the everyday life of all of life. For this he rents an empty warehouse in Manhattan , in which he recreates New York as a backdrop and lets actors portray the people around him. Even after years of work, however, he does not succeed in getting to the core of his life and thus his piece; instead, the story becomes increasingly intricate.
Reviews
Lars-Olav Beier wrote in the magazine Der Spiegel on May 23, 2008 that the film was "a sometimes confusing, but sometimes also very moving tragic comedy" that shows its "hypochondriac hero" with "a lot of humor" . He was "screaming funny (...) and deeply sad at the same time" . The American film critic Roger Ebert named the film the best film of the 2000s.

- The film received an award in the “Best Debut Film” category at the Independent Spirit Awards 2009.
- In 2008, Kaufman's film competed for the Palme d'Or at the 61st Cannes Film Festival , but remained unprivileged.
