action

Tobias Rothgerber, a student at a comprehensive school , appears to the police and claims to be worried about his best friend David Kullmann. He fears that something might have happened to him, but disappears again without giving any details. Shortly afterwards, an anonymous caller answers that he has found the body of a boy in an old parking garage . As it turns out, it's actually David. Investigators Kappl and Deininger question David's classmates, but nobody seems to be affected by the death of their classmate. Tobias is taken for interrogation . During the interrogation, the young person is extremely silent. However, the evidence speaks against him. For example, his shoe prints are found on the corpse and he is identified as the anonymous caller. Tobias is therefore temporarily taken into custody , at the same time his PC is confiscated to search him for clues.

The inspectors received their first useful clues from Tobias' classmate Anna Lena. She claims David was a loner and was bullied all the time, mainly by his classmate Jonathan Seibert. During the interrogation, Jonathan is initially unmoved, but obviously he has something to hide as well. Tobias is released after two days and visits Jonathan several times. Jonathan doesn't want to tell his mother what they are doing in his room. During the analysis of the hard drive of his confiscated computer, videos were found showing Jonathan and David arguing on a parking deck and David being pushed over a railing by Jonathan. He confesses the act, but asserts that it was an accident. Tobias, on the other hand, who was also bullied by Jonathan, accidentally saw and filmed the scene, but without helping his friend. Instead of reporting the crime, he used it to blackmail Jonathan. In the opinion of Commissioner Kappl, he wanted to exercise power over him one day. After Jonathan has been arrested , Tobias is released and hit by a truck as he leaves the police station . It was probably suicide .

Reviews

“In 'Helpless', the two Saarbrücken inspectors are thrown back on their intuition, their feelings, their humanity. It's about young people and their brutal rituals, it's about the business. Kappl and Deininger have to show their colors. 'Helpless' is a coolly staged, concentrated conversation film that doesn't even use that many words. "

- Rainer Tittelbach : tittelbach.tv

“But this episode is a final exam for the commissioners. 'Helpless' unfolds a force that is disturbing, that one stands in amazement and actually helpless. The story of a murdered schoolchildren who is found brutally beaten up in a parking garage tells of leaders, fellow travelers, outcasts and the war in the classroom, as it could happen every day in Germany's schools. She tells of teachers who act resignedly and impassively, and of parents who cannot find access to the hustle and bustle in the youth room. […] This 'crime scene' raises questions that cannot be answered, that no one has yet answered. It shows the confused souls of some teenagers under the magnifying glass, who look like vampires in the currently popular Hollywood films and who display a frightening propensity for violence. "
