The Technical School of the Air Force 1 (abbreviated TSLw 1 ) was a training facility for the Air Force of the German Armed Forces founded in Kaufbeuren in 1957 . In December 2013 the TSLw 1 was combined with the TSLw 3 in Faßberg to form the Air Force Technical Training Center (TAusbZLw) based in Faßberg. The Kaufbeuren Air Base will act as the South Department of the TAusbZLw from January 1, 2014.

Training assignment

The task of the school was the training and further education of soldiers of all ranks and civilian personnel of the army , the air force and the navy within the framework of a basic training on the weapon systems Tornado , Phantom and Eurofighter and their armament . Other sub-areas of the training were electronic warfare , military air traffic control and computer-aided operations management. The practical training took place on the emergency aircraft or on simulators . The permanent staff at the Kaufbeuren site comprised around 650 soldiers and civilian workers. The teaching staff consisted of officers , non-commissioned officers , civil servants and employees .

School history

On 14 December 1957, handed commander of US Air Forces in Europe , General Frank F. Everest, at a ceremony in Erding the airbases Erding , Fuerstenfeldbruck , Landsberg am Lech and Kaufbeuren to the then Federal Minister of Defense Franz Josef Strauss .

The school was established on December 16, 1957, with several reclassifications over the next ten years. Already in 1960, the training of was about aerial personnel to the Aviation School of the Air Force 50 issued. The missile group 11, from which the missile squadron 1 later emerged, was set up from the teaching staff VII with the deployable technical training train TM-61 Matador . In November 1971 the school was recognized as an electronics training center, where the graduate can acquire a nationwide electronics pass . For reasons of noise protection , a double noise protection hall was built in October 1976 for 25 million DM. On September 5, 1991, as part of the taking of Air Force Structure 4, the TSLw 1 air base group was disbanded and on September 30, 1991 regular military flight operations at Kaufbeuren air base were discontinued. From a merger of the Technical School of the Air Force 2 with the Technical School of the Air Force 1, the new Technical School of the Air Force 1 was created in 1994 with the locations Kaufbeuren, Lechfeld , Erndtebrück ( Hachenberg barracks ), Brakel / Auenhausen , Karlsruhe , Neubiberg and Laage .

On February 18, 2003, the first Eurofighter landed on the eyrie. In spring 2004 the readiness for training for this aircraft type was declared. In 2004 the training workshop of the now disbanded Fighter-Bomber Squadron 34 "Allgäu" moved from the Memmingen Air Base to Kaufbeuren. Since 2005, with the help of the newly built training hall 114 and the completely renovated training workshop in building 8, civilian training positions for 24 aircraft mechanics have been offered. Infrastructure measures at the Technical School of the Air Force 1 are part of the renovation program for the redevelopment of barracks west .

As part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr , the closure of the site was announced on October 26, 2011. The Technical School of the Air Force 1 (TSLw 1) at the StO Kaufbeuren and the TSLw 3 at the StO Faßberg ( Faßberg Air Base ) are to be dissolved by December 31, 2013. The Technical Training Center of the Air Force (TAusbZLw) will be set up at the StO Faßberg (Faßberg Air Base ) on January 1, 2014 and will be subordinate to the Air Force Support Associations (KdoUstgVbdeLw) FB Log / Nu command. At the StO Kaufbeuren the TAusbZLw Abt Süd will be set up on January 1, 2014 and, if the requirements are met, it will be relocated to the StO Untermeitingen ( Lechfeld Air Base ). The training groups I - IV are subordinate to the TAusbZLw in Faßberg. The training groups V - VII (technical training of aircraft mechanics for Eurofighter and Tornado) are subordinate to the TAusbZLw Abt Süd in Kaufbeuren (Untermeitingen in the target structure). The training of air traffic controllers should be relocated to Erndtebrück ( Hachenberg barracks ).

Despite the closure of the Bundeswehr location, the training of air traffic controllers in Kaufbeuren is to be maintained. The State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense, Christian Schmidt , confirmed this to the BR . The training will be continued in a civil-military cooperation, the Federal Ministry of Defense decided. According to this, a Europe-wide tendering process will now be launched, in which companies can apply for the joint project with the Bundeswehr at the Kaufbeuren location. It is expected that there will be a surcharge in the first half of 2014, and before the withdrawal at the end of 2017, the air traffic controller training as a public-private partnership could start. A private company at the air base in Kaufbeuren would train air traffic controllers for both the civil and military sectors. The Bundeswehr would then be one of several customers.

On September 30, 2013, Colonel Richard Drexl, the last commander of TSLw 1, retired.
