The systematic focal points of his work include the philosophy of mind ( theory of thinking or intellect ) as well as studies on the philosophy of war and peace , the sociology of terror , media sociology and philosophical urbanism as a new philosophical discipline . Historically, he placed the Georgian and European philosophy of the Middle Ages , the modern era and the present at the center of his research. Tengis Iremadze is currently working primarily on historical and systematic research into Caucasian philosophy. Iremadze not only publishes in Georgian, but his important contributions have also appeared in numerous other languages.

Iremadze was best known for his publications on the philosophy of antiquity ( Pythagoras , Plato , Aristotle ) and late antiquity (especially Proclus ) as well as on Christian thought of the Georgian ( Ioane Petrizi ) and Latin Middle Ages ( Dietrich von Freiberg , Berthold von Moosburg ). His monographs on Friedrich Nietzsche (2006) and Walter Benjamin (2008), published in Georgian, are regarded as standard works in Georgian philosophy today. He has published numerous articles in various languages, particularly on the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. In addition, he translated little writings by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , Walter Benjamin, Hans Blumenberg , André Glucksmann and Ernst Meister into Georgian. Georgian translations of important philosophical and political works by Friedrich Nietzsche, Alexis de Tocqueville , Thomas Paine , Benjamin Franklin , Thomas Jefferson , James Wilson , Benjamin Rush , John Dewey , Henri Bergson , Carl Schmitt , Leo Strauss , Hannah Arendt and Niklas have appeared under his direction Luhmann .

career path

Tengis Iremadze studied philosophy and sociology at the Ivane Djawachishvili State University in Tbilisi from 1993 to 1998 . His academic teachers included the well-known and influential Georgian philosopher Guram Tevzadze. In his diploma thesis Iremadse devoted himself to a new interpretation of Friedrich Nietzsche's " Also sprach Zarathustra " and gave important impulses to Georgian Nietzsche research through a re-evaluation of this work. In 2003 he received his doctorate from Burkhard Mojsisch with the dissertation "Conceptions of Thought in Neo-Platonism. On the Reception of Proclic Philosophy in the German and Georgian Middle Ages: Dietrich von Freiberg - Berthold von Moosburg - Ioane Petrizi " at the Ruhr University Bochum . Tengis Iremadze has been Professor of Philosophy and Social Sciences and Director of the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences at Grigol Robakidze University ( Tbilisi / Georgia ) since 2007 . Intercultural philosophy historiography

In his dissertation (2003) Iremadze already presented a fruitful concept of intercultural philosophizing. There he not only reconstructed the reception of a central concept (the theory of thought) of the late antique philosopher Proclus in the medieval Latin West, but also consulted old Georgian texts on the Elementatio theologica ( Ioane Petrizi's translation and interpretation of this important text of Proclus) for his investigations : Here the possibility of a special intercultural comparison opened up for the first time, because both lines of development existed independently, so that there was no blurring or overlapping; both currents only assumed a common origin in late antiquity . Iremadze clearly recognized: It is precisely here (in language cultures that are far apart from one another) that the manifold causes of identity and difference of the respective inclusion of proklischer philosopheme can be optimally studied in detail. In his dissertation, he therefore presented more than a special study on the history of the reception of the philosophy of Proclus: rather, in his dissertation he combined different strands of interpretation and thus created the basis for this intercultural research area: This makes his work stand out from the numerous publications that have been published so far Ioane Petrizi, Dietrich von Freiberg and Berthold von Moosburg appeared.

Caucasian philosophy

The above Tengis Iremadze continued his research line in his book Philosophy at the Crossroads of Epochs and Cultures ( 2013 ) in a novel and original way by developing a concept of philosophy that can be defined with the help of a newly introduced concept "Crossroad". In this book he combined historical studies with systematic analyzes and presented the methodological requirements and foundations of a "Caucasian philosophy" by looking at thinking in the Caucasus as a whole for the first time , that is, he considered above all those thinkers of these Region that initiated productive philosophical relations between the Caucasian countries.

In terms of content, this book has a three-level structure: In introductory reflections, Tengis Iremadze discusses the methodological principles and above all addresses the basic term "crossroad" from different perspectives. The first part develops a phenomenology of some perspectives of intercultural thinking that are important from the point of view of the author. In the second part, there are basic basic terms that have survived historically and also appear capable of change for the future. In the third part, Iremadze discusses new concepts of intercultural thinking. Here, too, the term "crossroad" plays an essential role, because it was suitable as a basis for the development of a new philosophical theory of interculturality .

In this respect, the book provides important tools for the interpretation of intercultural phenomena. On the one hand, the outlines of a spiritual cultural area and the relationships to other philosophical cultures become clear for the first time; on the other hand, it establishes a theory that feels obliged to both hermeneutic practice and philosophical systematics.

effect

As a Georgian philosopher, Tengis Iremadze received a lot of international attention. Although his dissertation still has a strong philosophical-historical character, he later turned to systematic philosophical research . Like hardly any other Georgian philosopher of today, he reacted in his research to questions of classical-traditional philosophy as well as to problems of contemporary philosophy. Because he showed the possibility of Caucasian philosophy as an important philosophical tradition that had hitherto been neglected in the history of philosophy and initiated a paradigm shift, his work in this field of research attracted the attention of international specialists. His students and colleagues (especially Giorgi Tavadze and Giorgi Khuroshvili) are currently successfully and productively continuing this research within the framework of the Archive for Caucasian Philosophy and Theology of the New Georgian University (Poti / Georgia).
