The Bold Ones: The Protectors is an American television series that ran in 1969 and 1970. It was developed by William Sackheim and Roland Wolpert . The main roles were played by Leslie Nielsen and Hari Rhodes . The court drama is part of the Wheel series The Bold Ones .

content

An unnamed city in California . Sam Danforth, a seasoned, die-hard, and very conservative Cleveland police officer becomes the city's new chief of police. He not only has to deal with the explosive situation in the city, he also meets the prosecutor William Washburn, a young, idealistic and liberal African American who is aiming for a political career. The two seldom agree at first, but learn to respect each other.

background

The series The Bold Ones: The Protectors relied heavily on relentless realism. To achieve this, music was largely dispensed with, including theme music, which was considered daring for the time.

The characters Danforth and Washburn are created absolutely equal, which Leslie Nielsen , who nominally had the lead role, was proud of.

Despite good reviews, The Bold Ones: The Protectors was discontinued after one season and replaced by The Bold Ones: The Senator .

Reviews

Stuart Galbraith IV's review focuses on the pilot, which he extensively praises. He anticipated the iconography and realistic portrayal of the suburbs of films like Dirty Harry and Focal Point Brooklyn . The following series is clearly weaker and less carefully produced, but still well above average. He finds Leslie Nielsen's performance very good, pointing out that the series is before the humorous part of Nielsen's career. Danforth is depicted humorless, but - especially in the series - so hard-nosed that he still reminds of Frank Drebin (from The Naked Cannon ). The "criminally underrated" Hari Rhodes is even better.

Joe Corey also thinks Leslie Nielsen's performance is good, but points out that you can only really appreciate it when you have made it clear that there would be no more or less comical resolution of the event. The Bold Ones: The Protectors is an “extraordinary drama” for him, it has “revolutionized the police drama” through a “documentary atmosphere” and through “the lack of a manipulative soundtrack”. He also asks why the series was so short. He comes to the conclusion that the south of the USA was not yet ready for an African American in a managerial position.

Frank Calvillo sees the series similarly. Although The Bold Ones: The Protector "never got the chance to be the series it could have been, it ran long enough to still be seen as a groundbreaking piece of television." He, too, points to the brave decision to give up music entirely, and he too asks why the series is no longer running.
