The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is a point-and-click adventure from the Bremen development studio King Art , which was published from February 2015 by the publisher Nordic Games for various computer and console systems. It is the successor to the adventure game The Book of Unwritten Tales by the same development studio.

action

The action starts a year after the end of the previous one and takes place again in the fantasy world of Aventásia. It revolves around the three heroes friends of the previous game, who go their separate ways at the beginning of the game: the gnome magician Wilbur Wetterquarz has just started a job as a teacher at the magic school in Seefels, the elf princess Ivodora Eleonora Clarissa ("Ivo" for short) pregnant without ever having sex, and pirate Nathaniel "Nate" Bonnett tries to steal a magical artifact. In the Aventasia game world, something strange is happening: A kind of magical plague transforms living beings into pink things. At the same time, an election campaign for the post of archmage is raging in the university town of Seefels - incumbent Alastair is a benefactor of Wilbur's, competitor Cybill van Buren is a wealthy intriguer who wants to exploit Wilbur in the election campaign. When the gnome is accused of murdering Archmage Alastair, the paths of the three protagonists begin to cross.

Game principle and technology

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is a 3D point-and-click adventure . From polygons composite, three-dimensional figures also act in three-dimensional scenes; hand-drawn images are occasionally integrated in the background (e.g. in distant landscapes) and moved relative to the objects in the foreground using parallax scrolling . Used came the Unity - engine , while for the two predecessors yet OGRE was used. The player can use the mouse to move his character through the locations and use the mouse buttons to initiate actions that allow the character to interact with his environment. Wilbur, Ivo and Nate can find objects, apply them to the environment or other objects and communicate with NPCs . As the story progresses, more locations will be unlocked. The camera shows what is happening from a frontal perspective; If the player leaves the field of vision within a room, the camera moves in the respective direction. Dialogues take place via context-related selection menus. If the plot requires it, you can switch back and forth between the game characters, whereby the characters sometimes have to interact with each other and at times Nate's companion "cattle", a human-sized, stuffed animal-like creature, can be controlled. Cutscenes take place mostly in game graphics. In static scenes, the calculated graphics are partially pepped up by projection mapping and manual post-processing. A trademark of The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 as well as the entire game series are numerous humorous allusions to popular clichés of geek culture, here in particular role-playing games , as well as elements of popular culture.

Production notes

The basic financing of the game was provided by the publisher Nordic Games. In order to be able to deliver better game quality, the development studio King Art launched a crowdsourcing campaign on the Kickstarter platform in February 2014 , which was supposed to raise 65,000 US dollars within four weeks. This amount should be used for a graphic revision, e.g. B. the projection mapping are financed. In addition, so-called “stretch goals” were published, extensions of the original game or publication concept, which should be implemented when predefined financial goals are achieved. A total of 170,000 US dollars were raised, which was used to finance, among other things, the expansion of the game with optional strings of puzzles that were not required for the solution, as well as a recording of the game soundtrack by an orchestra. The game was published chapter by chapter as early access software via the Steam download platform from September 2014 . The finished game was released for PCs in February 2015 both via digital channels (in addition to Steam and GOG ) and via analog distribution channels such as retailers or online mail order companies. The version for PlayStation and Xbox was released in September of the same year, the Wii-U version followed in June 2016.

Some of the character drawings are by Marvin Clifford , one of the creators of the webcomic Shakes and Fidget . Joseline Gassen , Oliver Rohrbeck , Udo Schenk , Marion von Stengel , Bernd Vollbrecht , Bodo Wolf , Dietmar Wunder and Santiago Ziesmer were hired as speakers for the German version . The London studio Outsource Media was responsible for the English localization and also used well-known speakers. So Nate Bonnett is voiced by Doug Cockle, the Geralt from the role-playing game series The Witcher , and the role of an opponent Wilbur's was taken over by Tim Bentinck . The soundtrack, composed by Benny Oschmann , was played by the Prague Philharmonic , as announced when the corresponding stretch goal was achieved .
