history

The band was formed in the fall of 1998 by “Million Dollar” singer Matt Hock, guitarist David Walsh, bassist Damian Genuardi and drummer Dan Colby. Sam Cave (ex- Trouble ) joined the band a year later as the second guitarist . This was followed by a self-titled EP in 2000 on Jade Tree Records and appearances with The Promise Ring and Turning Machine , and in the same year the debut album Flash Flash Flash . The song Here I Am from here was to be heard in the computer game Tony Hawk's Underground . This was followed by concerts in the USA together with AFI and Sick of It All . Meanwhile Colby left the band and was replaced by Andrew Black. In 2001 the band also played together with Sick of It All in Munich . In the fall of 2002, the groups reached a contract with Virgin Records . At the same time, the band also played appearances with The (International) Noise Conspiracy , Rocket from the Crypt and Cave In . Furthermore, the band founded their own label called Tarantulas Records to give bands friends a chance to release records. The Explosion also released the two EPs Sick of Modern Art (2003) and Red Tape (2004) on their label , before the album Black Tape was released in Europe in March 2005 via Virgin Records . In the USA, the album was released in autumn of the previous year. The recordings for this took about two and a half months and took place in Idaho . The album release was followed by a live album called Live in Boston , which was recorded in December 2004. In 2004 the guitarist Cave left the band and was replaced by Chris Gonzales. This was followed by two singles, Here I Am and the newly recorded No Revolution , which was first heard on Flash Flash Flash . Here I Am was used in the computer game Tony Hawk's Underground 2 and Burnout 3: Takedown and reached number 75 on the British singles chart. No Revolution was heard in the game Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition . In February 2007, the band lost their contract with Virgin Records again, so that the group could not release their finished album Bury Me Standing . The group then broke up in late April. Bury Me Standing was finally released on Chunksaah Records in 2012. For a one-off performance on December 28, 2011 in Asbury Park , New Jersey , the band got together again. Another gig is planned for July 2014 at This Is Hardcore Fest in Philadelphia .

style

According to David Häussinger of the Ox-Fanzine, the band played a mix of British punk from the 1977s and old American hardcore punk on their self-titled EP , which evokes memories of CIV . The music can also be described as a mixture of Gorilla Biscuits , of which The Explosion has the speed, and Stiff Little Fingers , of which the band has the anthemic. According to Peter from punknews.org, the band plays classic punk rock on Flash Flash Flash . According to boxcar001101 from punknews.org , influences from bands like The Buzzcocks and Cheap Trick can be heard on Black Tape . The group also processed rock music from the 1960s and 1970s in their songs for the first time . According to altpress.com's Chris Parker , the band on Bury Me Standing have moved away from their hardcore punk and thrash metal roots and play “power pop / punk” comparable to the music of The Saints , UK Subs and The Damned .

According to Henning Richter from Metal Hammer, the band plays punk rock on Steal This , with each song clearly different from the others: “'Dotted Lines' is pure West Coast melodicore; 'Blue' has a good shot of rock and roll in punk as well as a guitar solo; 'Safety Belt' shows that you can make a catchy song with simple means; 'EXPLO.SION' is 100% Ramones- soaked: 'Turnaround' has a clever solo guitar and a good portion of youthful anger in its stomach. ”According to Elmar Salmutter from Metal Hammer, the band play dynamic punk rock on Flash Flash Flash , and the group does so serve in different subgenres such as street punk and hardcore punk. He recommended the album to fans of Misfits , Sex Pistols , Stiff Little Fingers, and Rancid . Salmut also felt that Black Tape sounded like it was influenced by bands like The Clash and ALL .
