The International is an annual forming E-Sports - Dota 2 - Championship Tournament the by the US, game developer Valve is organized. The tournament began as the first public performance of Dota 2 in August 2011 at Gamescom in Cologne with prize money of 1.6 million US dollars . Since the second edition it has been held annually in Seattle . The reigning champion is the European team OG .
The International is considered the most prestigious tournament on the Dota 2 scene. At the same time, it is also the most highly endowed esports tournament in the world. The base amount of the prize money of 1.6 million US dollars is always provided by Valve, and since 2013 the prize money has been topped up by Dota 2 players using a digital compendium called Battlepass . 25% of every Battle Pass purchase goes into the prize pool. At The International 2,018 dollars was distributed in prize money over 25 million. In 2019, the prize pool topped $ 29 million by mid-July.

Valve announced The International in August 2011 as the first glimpse into Dota 2 . The tournament was held at Gamescom in Cologne. 16 invited teams competed for a total of 1.6 million US dollars, which was the highest prize money ever awarded in such a tournament.
The event was broadcast live on the internet in four languages (English, Chinese, Russian and German). After the games, they were also made available on the video platforms YouTube and Youku .

The International 2012
Valve announced The International 2012 on May 10, 2012, with the two top rated DotA teams in the world, DK and defending champion Natus Vincere, as the first invited teams. Unlike the previous tournament, Valve held The International 2012 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle from August 31 to September 2. 14 teams were invited and 2 selected through qualification.
The event was broadcast live on the internet in three languages (English, Chinese and Russian). After the games, they were also made available on the video platforms YouTube and Youku .

The International 2013
Valve announced The International 2013 on April 23, 2013; it will take place again at Benaroya Hall in Seattle from August 7th to 11th. The first team to be invited was the defending champions Invictus Gaming . 16 teams take part in the event again, 13 of which were invited directly and the three remaining places are selected through two qualifying tournaments and a game at the beginning of the event.
On May 6, it was announced that interested viewers could purchase an interactive electronic manual in the Dota 2 online shop. This contains additional information about the teams and players and gives viewers the opportunity to make predictions for certain events during the tournament. A quarter of the profit from the sale of the manual will be added to the $ 1.6 million prize pool.
With total prize money of $ 2,874,732, the tournament regained the title of “Highest Endowed E-Sports Tournament” after losing it to the Riot League of Legends World Championship ($ 2,000,000).

The International 2014
The International 2014 surpasses its predecessor many times over with a total prize money of over $ 10 million. A total of $ 9.33 million of the prize money was crowdfunded by the Dota 2 community . Again 16 teams took part, eleven of which were invited and four more were determined through qualifying tournaments in North / South America, China, Southeast Asia and Europe. There was also a wildcard winner .
Defending champion Alliance was eliminated with 6: 9 points in the preliminary round.
In the final, which was held as the best-of-five format , the two teams Newbee and Vici Gaming faced each other. Newbee won 3-1.

The International 2015
The International 2015 was announced by Valve on January 7, 2015 . It took place from August 3, 2015 to August 8, 2015 at the KeyArena in Seattle . 16 teams took part in the tournament. The winner of the tournament was the American team Evil Geniuses , which competed with the players Clinton "Fear" Loomis , Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan , Saahil "UNiVeRsE" Arora , Kurtis "AUI_2000" Ling and Peter "ppd" Dager .
Of these 16 teams, 10 were invited ( Evil Geniuses , Team Secret , Vici Gaming , Invictus Gaming , LGD Gaming , Cloud 9 , Virtus.pro , Newbee , Team Empire and fnatic ) and 4 qualified ( CompLexity , EHOME , Natus Vincere and MVP HOT6ix ). Two other teams took the chance to take part with a so-called wildcard ( CDEC Gaming and MVP Phoenix ).
The prize money amounted to over 18 million US dollars , with more than 16.8 million of the US dollar Dota were asked -Spielern worldwide.

The International 2016
The International 2016 took place from August 3, 2016 to August 13, 2016 at the KeyArena in Seattle . Another 16 teams took part in this tournament. Of these 16 teams, 6 were invited ( OG , Team Liquid , Newbee , LGD Gaming , MVP Phoenix and Natus Vincere ) and 8 qualified ( Team Secret , Alliance , Wings Gaming , Vici Gaming Reborn , TnC Gaming , fnatic , Evil Geniuses and Digital chaos ). Two other teams could participate through a wildcard ( EHOME , Escape Gaming ). The winner of the tournament was the Chinese team Wings Gaming, which competed with the players Chu "shadow" Zeyu , Zhou "bLink" Yang , Zhang "Faith_bian" Ruida , Zhang "Innocence" Yiping and Li "iceice" Peng . After the victory, the team disbanded and is still considered a legendary Royal Roader today .

The International 2017
In 2017, The International was held from August 2 to August 12, 2017 at the KeyArena in Seattle . For the first time, 18 teams took part, six of which were invited directly and 12 were able to qualify. With prize money of $ 24,787,916, the tournament was able to take the title of the most highly endowed e-sports event from its predecessor. Team Liquid won first place . Your team captain Kuroky became the e-athlete with the most tournament prize money ever won.

The International was held for the first time in 2018 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver . The provisional prize pool after the finals ended was $ 25,470,555.
