action

In 2048, on an earth overpopulated and plagued by violent conflict, scientists consider Saturn's moon Titan as a new home for humanity, led by Professor Martin Collingwood. Rick Janssen, a fighter pilot, volunteers for an experiment with 14 test subjects in which the human body is forced to adapt to the supercold methane liquids and the oxygen-depleted atmosphere of Titan. Together with Rick, his wife Abigail, a doctor, and his son Lucas are moving to the Titan I research center. The first results are promising. Rick can swim at incredible speeds and stay underwater for 40 minutes. Rick's training gets more intense as he and the others increasingly adapt to titanium-like environments. Rick notices that some of his hair is falling out. One of the team members begins to convulsively and dies. Abigail notices that all of the subjects' blood veins darken . Volunteer Zane has a nervous breakdown and hits his wife, Rayenne. Abigail's concern grows. She begins to experiment on a blood sample and finds that it actually turns darker. Rick undergoes corneal surgery to deal with the poor light on Titan. Later, when he has complications, Abigail confronts Collingwood with Rick's changes, but he does not reveal anything. Zane suffers another nervous breakdown and throws Rayenne through a window, killing her instantly. He is shot by the military police. When Abigail visits Rick at the medical facility, she steals a key card and sneaks into Collingwood's office. She finds reports of autopsies of the deceased test subjects and discovers that their DNA has been altered to create the next human species, the "Homo titaniens". During a meeting with NASA , Collingwood is accused of conducting forced evolutionary experiments without adequate evidence or ethical reasons. He is threatened with stopping his research. Abigail confronts him on the same matter, and he admits he doesn't really know what the surviving test subjects will ultimately become. Rick will undergo major surgery to adapt his new senses to the conditions on Titan. He and Tally, the only other surviving test subject, complete their training and complete their conversion to Homo titaniens. Abigail is appalled when the distinctly transformed Rick loses the ability to speak and is now communicating at a low frequency that normal human ears cannot detect. Tally kills her husband and goes to Rick's house. Abigail and Lucas go into hiding while the military police surround Tally and Rick. Tally kills some cops before killing herself, and Rick kills more after that. When Abigail and Lucas confront him, Rick flees. He realizes that he has become a monster . Abigail finds Rick on a hill they often jogged to. The military arrests the two. Abigail wakes up to find Rick in critical condition from being unable to cope with the Earth's atmosphere . Abigail is supposed to give him a chemical solution that acts like a lobotomy and erases all of his memories. Instead, however, she gives him a harmless saline solution that enables him to escape. Rick kills the soldiers chasing him when Abigail and Lucas with Dr. Freya flee, a Collingwood assistant who disagrees with his methods. They find a badly wounded Rick and give him first aid until they are surrounded by Collingwood and his men. Collingwood orders his men to kill the three people, but the Colonel who leads the soldiers refuses and arrests Collingwood, disgusted by Collingwood's actions. At the end, Rick is shown how he explores Titan and flies over a methane lake on his own.
