The Trouble with Being Born is an Austrian-German feature film under the direction of Sandra Wollner , which together with Roderick Warick the writer wrote. The film had its world premiere in February 2020 at the Berlinale in the Encounters section and opened in Austrian cinemas on June 18. The German theatrical release took place on July 1, 2021.

plot

The film-historical topos of the artificial human is presented here in an unusual way with a focus on the emotional level. Elli is an android , a machine in the form of a girl, a sex robot . She lives with Georg, whom she calls papa. It is there to make him happy, because it was built according to his ideas. They drift through the summer, swim in the pool during the day and he takes them to bed in the evening. He loves her more than anything and yet she is only fiction . In reality, his world is falling apart, his daughter will never appear again.

Georg created Elli from a memory that means a lot to him, but is nothing more to her than programming. She follows this one night, deep into the forest, following a weakening echo. When she meets her real role model, an odyssey develops that puts the audience more and more in Ellis' perspective.

The dystopian film shows "the story of a machine and the ghosts that we all carry within us", the "eternal now", the "view of a machine on the world".

The Trouble with Being Born is the second feature film by Austrian director Sandra Wollner .

It is about the director's thesis produced in 2018/2019 at the Film Academy in Ludwigsburg. You can see Lena Watson , Dominik Warta , Ingrid Burkhard , Jana McKinnon and Simon Hatzl .

Lixi Frank and David Bohun (Panama Film KG), Andi G. Hess, Astrid Schäfer (Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg), Viktoria Stolpe (The Barricades) and Timm Kröger (The Barricades) were responsible for the production. Was also involved in the small teleplay ZDF . The film was shot in Lower Austria , among other places . The rental is in the hands of Cercamon.

The film had its world premiere in February 2020 at the Berlinale and was shown there in the Encounters section . This section wants to support new voices in the cinema and give more space to the various forms of cinema. He was awarded the special prize of the Encounters jury.
