Submitted films

On February 3, 2021, the Academy of Austrian Films announced the films that had been registered. A total of 41 Austrian feature films, including 16 feature films and 25 documentaries, as well as 16 short films were entered for the selection process. From the submissions, the members of the Academy of Austrian Films select the nominations in 16 award categories, which are to be announced at the end of April.

Austrian fiction and documentary films with a significant Austrian cultural character were eligible to participate. Short films qualified on the basis of awards and festival successes in the past year. The guidelines for submission have been changed due to postponed film releases, delays in film productions and the cinema ban of several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The academy's board of directors set a demonstrably planned theatrical release by March 31, 2021 as a sufficient criterion for participation. As an alternative to the regular cinema release, an online release of the film or commercial cinema screenings were also accepted.
