The event room

The Globe Wien was opened on October 7th, 2014 by its owners, Michael Niavarani & Georg Hoanzl , operators of the Hoanzl company of the same name . The design and shape of the stage are based on William Shakespeare's historic Globe Theater . The Globe Vienna has been operated by Niavarani & Hoanzl GmbH without any public subsidies since it opened .

The game plan focuses on humorous content. Numerous theater , cabaret , comedy and music events have already generated great public interest. Michael Niavarani's comedic adaptations of the Shakespeare material "Richard III." And "Romeo & Juliet" saw around 200,000 people. Austrian cabaret artists such as Josef Hader , Andreas Vitásek , Gernot Kulis , Omar Sarsam , Klaus Eckel , Thomas Stipsits , Alex Kristan , Gery Seidl , Viktor Gernot and many more play their current programs here, plus guest performances by German-speaking colleagues such as Michael Mittermeier , Kaya Yanar , Carolin Kebekus or Hazel Brugger . In addition to international guests such as John Cleese in 2019, in-house productions are also on the program.

Due to a fire in the Marx Halle on September 10, 2017 and the resulting damage to the roof structure, the Globe Vienna location was closed for a year. In October 2018 the newly built Globe Vienna was reopened in another area of the Marx Halle. Since then, the public space can be set up variably for 550 to 1400 visitors as required. The seats on the ground floor are barrier-free. With three bar areas and additional rooms, the foyer offers space for up to 1,500 guests.

Globe Vienna from 2014 to 2017

In September 2014, the Globe Wien was initially built in the left wing of the Marx Halle (also due to the unclear future use of the Marx Halle at the time) as a temporary event space by Niavarani und Hoanzl GmbH.

On October 7, 2014 the Globe Vienna opened with the world premiere of "The Incredible Tragedy of RICHARD III. - A Comedy by Michael Niavarani freely based on William Shakespeare". The play was on the program until January 2016 and attracted a total of around 100,000 visitors. In addition to a large number of cabaret and comedy events, other in-house productions took place in the following years, such as the double conference "Too stupid to be old" with Michael Niavarani and Otto Schenk , or "Reset - Alles auf Anfang", a comedy by Roman Frankl and Michael Niavarani. On March 28, 2016 Michael Niavarani's play "The most deplorable and completely unknown marital tragedy of Romeo & Juliet - no happy ending without death" was performed for the first time in Globe Vienna.

At the beginning of 2017, the long-term use of the Marx Halle location was unclear, but the City of Vienna extended the contract with the operators Michael Niavarani and Georg Hoanzl until mid-2019.

Fire on September 10, 2017 in the Marx Halle

On the night of September 10, 2017, a fire broke out in an area of the Marx Halle, which could be extinguished after several hours after a major operation by the Viennese professional fire brigade. The next day, the investigating authorities announced that the cause was arson. Although the fire did not take place on the premises of Globe Wien, they were badly affected by the effects of heat on the wrought-iron roof structure and games had to be stopped. On November 14, 2017, the authorities announced that those who caused the fire had been caught. The police were able to investigate two 19-year-olds who lit torches and candles in the hall to conjure up ghosts. However, one of the burning light sources fell over and ignited the fabric of a sofa. As a result, the fire spread quickly and subsequently spread to a hall partition and the roof area. In March 2018, the two perpetrators were conditionally sentenced to nine and seven months respectively for negligent causing a conflagration, endangering physical security and damage to property. The appellate court has now also imposed 40,000 euros in damages.

The previous location of Globe Vienna could no longer be used as a venue after the fire in September 2017.

Globe Vienna from 2018

In the months after the fire in September 2017, the complex consequential damage to the listed hall structure had to be analyzed. In particular, the steel roof structure of the listed hall was statically damaged by the heat. The games already planned for the 2017/18 season took place in various alternative locations in Vienna until summer 2018. Some events also had to be canceled.

In January 2018, the previous tenant of Marx Halle, Hey-U Mediagroup , was able to acquire the building rights for the property for 67 years as the best bidder in the “Marx Halle reloaded” procedure. Due to the associated dedication as an event location, the future of Globe Wien as a tenant there was also secured in the long term.

In spring 2018, the owners Michael Niavarani and Georg Hoanzl were able to start the reconstruction at a new location within the Marx Halle in cooperation with around sixty companies. The Globe Wien is now in the right wing of the hall. The break caused by the fire could be used for improvements, for example an enlargement of the audience area to a maximum capacity of 1,400 people.

The new location was opened on October 10, 2018 with a performance by Paul Pizzera and Otto Jaus . In the following seasons, in addition to German-language entertainment, the "English-language comedy" program was expanded, and international comedy stars such as Eddie Izzard , Bill Burr , Bill Bailey , Jimmy Carr , Daniel Sloss and many more have made guest appearances at Globe Vienna. British comedian John Cleese not only played his solo program in October 2019, but also eight sold-out appearances together with host Michael Niavarani, under the title "Hopeless but not serious".

The site

The Marx Halle is located in the large hall of the former Vienna Central Cattle Market and has been used as a venue for a wide variety of events under this name since 2014. The hall, which was originally almost 50 meters longer, is now 175 meters in length, 114 meters in width and 17 meters in height. This results in a total area of 20,000 square meters.

After the Vienna slaughterhouse was relocated in 1997, the hall stood empty for a long time. The iron structure and the roof were renovated between 2006 and 2007. From 2011 to 2014 the HEY-U Mediagroup developed a usage concept and has been operating the hall as an event location ever since. In January 2018, the previous tenant, Hey-U Mediagroup, as the best bidder in the “Marx Halle reloaded” procedure, was able to acquire building rights for the property for 67 years. Due to the associated dedication as an event location, the future of Globe Wien as a tenant there was also secured in the long term.

The Vienna Central Cattle Market

In May 1877 the Vienna City Council decided to set up the Vienna Central Cattle Market in St. Marx. In the course of this, the hall was planned according to the plans of the Viennese architect Rudolf Frey and completed in 1881. The cattle sales hall, consisting of two three-aisled halls, was henceforth the place where the animals were exhibited and traded. In 1997 the building was the only surviving wrought iron structure to be listed as a historical monument .
