The Theodor Heuss Bridge , named after the first Federal President Theodor Heuss , rarely referred to as the Rheinbrücke Frankenthal , leads the Autobahn 6 between Autobahn kilometers 565 and 566 over the Rhine , here its section Upper Rhine , and connects the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate in the west and Baden -Wuerttemberg in the east.

As a special feature, the bridge has a pedestrian and cycle path on the median to cross the Rhine; There are stairways for this purpose in the dividing pillars of the two bridgeheads .

Geographical location

The bridge spans the river at Rhine kilometer 432.6 at around 108  m above sea level. NHN north of the city of Ludwigshafen and Mannheim in east-west direction on the route Saarbrücken - Kaiserslautern -Mannheim- Viernheimer triangle . The western bank of the Rhine is at this point on Frankenthaler , the eastern on the Mannheim district. The nearest connection points are No. 23 Ludwigshafen-Nord in the west and No. 24 Mannheim-Sandhofen in the east. At medium water levels, the Rhine flows under the bridge at 86  m above sea level. NHN ; the height of the roadway above the water level is about 22 m.

construction

The length of the four-lane structure, which consists of the actual river bridge and two approach bridges , is 830 m. The foreland bridge on the western, Rhineland-Palatinate side consists of three vaults , that on the eastern side of six vaults . The pillars and arches are faced with red sandstone .

The river bridge is formed from a superstructure for each directional carriageway and has a two-span continuous beam in the longitudinal direction as a structural system. The steel girder bridge has span widths of 147 and 161 m. The height of the bridge superstructure is a constant 6.0 m, the total width 25.2 m.

Since there are no hard shoulders on the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke , there are often long jams after accidents or during maintenance work .

history

The construction of the bridge, in the design of which Friedrich Tamms , an architect from the circle of Hitler's confidante Albert Speer , was also involved, began in 1938. At that time, the river bridge represented a record for girder bridges with solid wall girders below . The construction was carried out in cantilever construction with auxiliary yokes, starting from the river pillar, in both directions. A serious accident occurred on December 12, 1940 when an assembly yoke of the river bridge between the river pillar and the Mannheim river pillar collapsed and 30 workers died. As a result and because of the advancing Second World War , further construction was suspended.

Work did not resume until 1948. On September 9, 1950, the first two-lane bridge superstructure was opened to traffic by Federal Transport Minister Hans-Christoph Seebohm ; a few days later Theodor Heuss visited the bridge named after him. The bridge was finally completed with all four lanes in 1964.

On February 23, 1981, a young couple from Ludwigshafen was murdered twice at the bridge on the Frankenthal side. The two young people were killed because they vigorously and successfully fought against the girl's rape . As part of the search, the act was reconstructed on film in the broadcast of file number XY ... unsolved on September 18, 1981; The structural features were also shown. Two sex offenders were identified as murderers in the second half of 1983 . It was discovered because one of them had killed his three children with a hammer after his marriage broke up and then passed away through suicide. Then his widow revealed herself to the police, who also found the second perpetrator in his environment. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for double murder and attempted rape.

On August 20, 1990, the charred body of a man was found in a corn field at the foot of the bridge on the Mannheim side. In 1994, after the case had been unsolved on January 14th and March 11th in the series file number XY ..., the murdered person was identified. As a member of a gang that shot an elderly couple during one of their raids in Solingen in 1990 , he was eliminated by his accomplices. One of the murderers was sentenced to 25 years in his home country Poland in 1995 , the other to life imprisonment in Mannheim in 1996.
