history

The Theodor Heuss School was founded in June 1884 by the Offenbach Chamber of Commerce under the name of the "Commercial Training School of the Chamber of Commerce" with two classrooms in the Altgräfinnenhaus at Glockengasse 56. It was the first nationwide institution to offer commercial apprenticeship training.

Just two years after it was founded, the premises turned out to be too small and the school moved several times within Offenbach's old town in the years to come, until in 1907 it was given a school building specially built for it in the rear building at Kaiserstraße 28 , the then seat of the Chamber of Commerce.

The school was financed in the first few years through school fees, contributions from the Chamber of Commerce and donations, from 1887/88 the city of Offenbach contributed financial resources and from 1902 the school was supported by grants from the State of Hesse.

Between 1884 and 1914 the number of pupils rose from 56 to 331, and then fell to 220 during the First World War . The first female apprentices started at the school in 1909.

1920 to 1950

In 1920 the school was nationalized and taken over by the city of Offenbach.

In 1922 the school received its first full-time headmaster with the introduction of the secondary commercial school . Due to a lack of space, she first moved to Hospitalstrasse in 1933 and from 1938 onwards she used the building of the former girls' secondary school on the site of today's town hall, at Berliner Strasse 100. When the school building was destroyed by an air raid on March 18, 1944, the School operations could be maintained in air raid shelters for a few months until it was stopped in autumn of the same year. It was only when the school reopened in 1946 in the Albert Schweitzer School building that teaching was resumed.

From 1950

In 1956 the school was relocated to the building of the former secondary school for girls at Geleitstrasse 18. In 1966 the “Commercial Training School of the Chamber of Commerce” was renamed “Theodor-Heuss-Schule” in reference to the first German Federal President Theodor Heuss, who was born the same year the school was founded. The school had already been granted the right to award the secondary school leaving certificate five years earlier . Shortly afterwards, in 1968, the vocational high school was also introduced .

The school moved to its current location on Buchhügel in 1972 and 1973. Over the years, the vocational school for foreign language secretariat was introduced in 1984/1985 and the one-year technical college in 1996 . In 1998 a cooperation with the August-Bebel-Schule for IT-Professions began.

In 2011, renovation work began, including the construction of a new school building and a gym, and the renovation of the old school building.

Student company Tasty Theo

The annual internship required to acquire the technical college entrance qualification can be completed in the departments of the student company Tasty Theo . The students are trained in the five areas of administration, kiosk, bistro, eco-shop and department store / office. Organic products are not only offered in the eco shop, so that the organic share of total sales is around 20%.

Migration advice

The strongly supported migration advice service has existed since 2006/2007. The reason for this are the advanced training courses held in 2005 and 2006 on the subject of psychosocial situations of young people and the consequences of flight and trauma for the teaching staff at the Theodor Heuss School.

The following problem areas were identified at the Theodor Heuss School:

  • High proportion of students with a migration background
  • Schoolchildren have little support in their school career and in preparing for a career
  • Parents are not clear about the school system or their rights
  • Migrant children face two styles of upbringing: authoritarian and democratic

These problem areas cause conflict among the students and the students become more noticeable. They disrupt the classroom, become aggressive, or are intolerant and derogatory towards other people. Migration advice should start there and solve the problems. The project has different goals:

  • Students should understand the causes of conflict
  • You should develop solution strategies
  • Students should see their positive values and incorporate them into everyday school life
  • Appreciate other races
  • People at risk of being transferred receive support
  • Pupils should be creative and cooperative
  • Parents should be informed more about what is happening at school
  • Parents should receive suggestions so that they can accompany their children to school despite their poor German
  • Parents should recognize that their values are an asset to the general public

These goals are to be achieved with three building blocks. Firstly, there should be student counseling, secondly there should be parenting advice and thirdly there should be a consultation with the teachers. In this way, the students should achieve a successful school leaving certificate, strengthen their self-esteem and promote identity. Furthermore, the teacher-student relationship is to be strengthened.

social learning

In the context of a school free of violence and drugs, social learning was introduced in 1996 in the Theodor Heuss School as a solution-oriented approach. Through targeted social skills training, socially disadvantaged and / or behavioral pupils in particular are to be supported in shaping their lives actively and responsibly. In terms of resilience pedagogy, the students are actively supported in finding their identity by developing and promoting important life skills and thereby strengthening their self-worth. The recognition and appreciation of one's own abilities and skills as well as the conscious perception and acceptance of one's own body are essential prerequisites. By training their social skills, the students get to know their own personality and develop it further. You will be shown ways to take responsibility for yourself and for your actions and to learn accordingly in a self-organized manner. The aim is to enjoy the performance and to understand obstacles as challenges. Accordingly, this approach to life skills not only forms the basis of modern addiction and violence prevention, but also has a positive effect on teaching and learning success.

Qualified vocational training support in vocational schools and companies

The project qualified vocational educational support in vocational schools and companies (in short: QuABB) accompanies and advises students during their apprenticeship as it is not always easy to find and complete an apprenticeship .

Interfaith project

Since 2006, many projects on the subject of multiculturalism have been taking place under the motto intercultural learning - so that education succeeds . In addition to various sub-projects such as information and cultural evenings, migration advice in schools and intercultural pastoral care, the focus is on mixed religious instruction. Here Muslims, Catholics, Protestants and atheists are taught together. This Theodor-Heuss-Schule project, which is almost unique in Germany, is entitled Paying attention to diversity - strengthening community .

Social worker

The social workers at the Theodor-Heuss-Schule help with referring them to advice centers and help centers (youth welfare office, immigration authorities, etc.). They also help with drug and addiction problems. Each student can volunteer to contact the social workers or a teacher can help them get in touch with the social workers. The teachers are in close contact with the social workers.

Remedial classes

The remedial classes are intended to help trainees, mostly from the retail sector, improve their secondary school leaving certificate. Through these lessons, the students can achieve an additional qualification for their middle school.

Tutoring - students help students

The student council (SV) has, due to the high failure rate of vocational students in the final exams for middle ripe launched a tutoring action. The student tuition is led by the SV members and carried out together with voluntary classmates.

cafeteria

The cafeteria is not used exclusively by the Theodor Heuss School, but also by the Käthe Kollwitz School and the Buchhügel Elementary School. At the cafeteria, schoolchildren can complete an annual internship with which they can then acquire the technical college entrance qualification. The cafeteria is visited by around 400 to 500 students every day.

School newspaper

The THS newsletter appears two to three times a year, the first edition appeared in November 2006. It informs pupils, parents, teachers and training companies about the news at the school. The articles in the booklet can also be found on the homepage of the Theodor-Heuss-Schule. The persons responsible for the THS newsletter are teachers and students from different years and school types.
