The Ewersbach Theological University is a state-recognized university of applied sciences sponsored by the church. It offers job-related courses in Protestant theology (Bachelor and Master level). The university belongs to the Association of Free Evangelical Churches in Germany KdöR and primarily trains pastors and missionaries for the Association of Free Evangelical Churches .

history

Beginnings in Vohwinkel

Since the foundation of the Federation of Free Evangelical Congregations in 1874, the establishment of a separate training center for full-time preachers had been considered. In 1912 Otto Schopf set up a preacher's school. The lessons initially took place in the rooms of the Free Evangelical Congregation Vohwinkel (today a district of Wuppertal ).

The First World War temporarily put an end to the preacher's school. In 1919 a new four-year "course" was started. The Nazi regime and the outbreak of World War II left deep marks. In 1939 the training center had to be closed, and almost all of the students were drafted for military service. The school was soon seized by the military, and later bombed-out families found a roof over their heads here.

New establishment in Ewersbach

In 1946 it was decided to reopen the preacher's seminary in Ewersbach (today part of the Dietzhölztal parish in the Lahn-Dill district ), where the site of a former Reich labor camp had been purchased. Initially, some barracks served as residential and teaching buildings. A new seminar building was not built until 1959. In 2007, the now renamed “Theological Seminary Ewersbach” moved to the newly built Kronberg Forum.

Recognition as a university of applied sciences

The application for recognition as a non-governmental university of applied sciences was prepared in a process lasting several years and submitted in 2010. On September 27, 2011, the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art awarded the training center the status of a state-recognized university. This was followed by the renaming in "Theological University Ewersbach". The recognition was initially limited to September 2016 and was extended for a further five years in October 2016.
