Thomas F. Fischer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas F. Fischer (born February 4, 1954 in Cologne , † November 2019 ) was a German performer , draftsman and installation artist .

Life

Fischer worked as a typesetter from 1972 to 1976, attended the Foolsschool Amsterdam in 1977 (lessons with Jango Edwards and the theater groups Het Dogtroep and Spiderwoman). From 1976 to 1979 he was a member (acting, stage design, public relations) of the free theater "Vaganten" (director Joachim Lang), with venues in France, Poland, Portugal and Germany. From 1978 to 1983 he studied art in Cologne as a master student with Renate Lewandowski and Daniel Spoerri . He has also worked as a musician, actor and set designer.

Many of his drawings, installations, actions and performances reveal themselves through the contrast between the banal and the highly cultural. On the one hand, mostly directly understandable to the senses, on the other hand, diverse references to Anglo-American and British music and art, to French, Italian and German culture, Fluxus and Pop Art only become understandable after a thorough study of the work.

“Extreme physical presence and anonymity when performing come together in his performances. They have a point of reference in the theater, to a certain extent there is also the final curtain. At the end of most of the performances he puts a leopard skin over his head, which is already powerful. […] His performances take up socio-cultural, socio-political issues and they often work with an atmospheric compression, a radicality of the situation. They show process-based actions and then touch each other again with the drawings. "

“I don't have any material from many performances, so I don't have any more photos. […] In a certain way I act like a criminal in a detective novel who leaves no trace if possible. I consciously leave the viewer alone with this experience he has just had. ”The artist is interested in the question of the extent to which we as individuals, viewed in our private, personal status,“ in the focus of our personal contradictions can be corrupted and manipulated or are able to act independently. "

Although the direct and immediate had a high priority in his artistic work, Fischer was more of an artist for a thoughtful audience. In 1993 he received the Cologne Prize of the Swiss Anker Bank (today BCGE, Banque Cantonale de Genève) for his graphic work. His art lessons with Roma children have entered the literature on further education for primary school teachers as a practical example of inclusive pedagogy .

Moons primitif

In the performance "Monde Primitif" from 1981, Fischer worked with a small reading lamp, the flickering image of a defective television and his sense of smell, which he used to orientate himself in space. He had turned off his sight and hearing with a blindfold and ear plugs.

Quote

“At 11:55 p.m. Manni parked on the sidewalk in front of the Peppermint Lounge. [...] A kissing couple on the left at the table, at the counter an older man, skinny as a skeleton, [...]. In the back right the brood artist Fischer played with his walking stick, licked his bulging lips and tugged at his earring. "
