The Nieuw Amsterdam (III) was a cruise ship for the Holland America Line that entered service in 1983 . At the time of her delivery, she was the shipping company's largest ship and at the same time the first newbuilding for Holland America since 1973. The Nieuw Amsterdam remained in service until 2000 and was then sold to the United States as a Patriot . The ship was last used as Thomson Spirit for Thomson Cruises since 2003 . After the shipping company was renamed Marella Cruises, it was named Marella Spirit in 2018 . In the same year it was retired and scrapped in India .

history

Holland America Line

The Nieuw Amsterdam was built as one of two sister ships at Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire . The launch took place on August 20, 1982. On June 24, 1983, a fire broke out on the almost completed ship, in which the main electrical switchboard was destroyed. This delayed delivery by three weeks. In July 1983 the Nieuw Amsterdam was finally delivered to the Holland America Line and put into service.

The Nieuw Amsterdam was used for cruises off Canada and Alaska in the winter months in the Caribbean and in the summer months. In April 1984 she added her sister ship Noordam, which was identical in construction . Both ships were later used for cruises around the world.

The commissioning of the Nieuw Amsterdam and her sister ship marked a change for the Holland-America Line, which had only operated a small fleet in the previous years and which was significantly enlarged by the two newbuildings. In addition, the Nieuw Amsterdam was the first passenger ship to be built for Chantiers de l'Atlantique since the Renaissance in 1966. Holland America had not put a new build into service since the much smaller Prinsendam in 1973. The construction of the Nieuw Amsterdam and the Noordam is said to have been partly financed with the insurance sum of the Prinsendam, which sank in October 1980 after a fire in the Gulf of Alaska .

American Classic Cruises

Towards the end of 1999 the Nieuw Amsterdam was sold to American Classic Cruises , but continued to sail for Holland America and therefore kept the old name for the time being. Before it was delivered to the new owner, the ship was used as a floating hotel at the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000 . On October 18, the ship was finally handed over to its new owner in San Francisco and renamed the Patriot . The first cruise for the new owner took place on December 2, 2000.

The Patriot was used exclusively for cruises with departure and arrival ports in Honolulu and was also registered there. The Patriot was the first ocean-going passenger ship since 1958 to be registered under the American flag. The ship completed its first cruise on December 2, 2000 and was then used for short trips. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, the number of passengers fell so sharply that the shipping company had to file for bankruptcy in October 2001 and was dissolved shortly afterwards. The Patriot was in Honolulu issued and offered for sale.

On January 27, 2002, the ship was bought back by Holland America Line and renamed Nieuw Amsterdam again. However, it was not started up again, but remained on the hook.

In May 2002 the ship was chartered to the Cypriot Louis Cruise Line and renamed Spirit . After modernization in Perama , the ship was chartered out to the British shipping company Thomson Cruises on May 3, 2003 and renamed Thomson Spirit . Since then, the ship has been used for Mediterranean cruises in the summer months, while it was laid up in the winter.

During the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi , the Thomson Spirit was used together with the Grand Holiday and the Louis Olympia as a barge.

After the shipping company was renamed Marella Cruises, the ship was named Marella Spirit from March 2018 . At the end of October 2018, it left the Marella Cruises fleet after the charter expired. The original 1995 Celebrity Cruises in service Marella Explorer 2 replaced the Marella Spirit . The ship was most recently managed by the Greek company Optimum Shipmanagement Services, which belongs to the shipping company Celestyal Cruises (formerly Louis Cruise Line).

At the end of October 2018, the Marella Spirit was sold for demolition. In November 2018, the ship was first renamed Mare S and finally La Spirit and started sailing under the flag of Palau , home port was Malakal Harbor . On December 5, 2018, the ship reached the roadstead off Bhavnagar . On December 7, 2018, the ship was hauled into the roadstead in front of Alang and stranded for demolition on December 8, 2018.

The sister ship Noordam was also sold to Thomson Cruises after being withdrawn from Holland-America Line in 2004 and operated as Thomson Celebration . After the shipping company was renamed Marella Cruises, it was still in use as the Marella Celebration until 2020 .
