Torben (also: Thorben ) is a male given name , which is particularly common in Scandinavia and Northern Germany. Torben is a Danish variant of the Norwegian Thorbjørn , Thorben with "h" the corresponding Swedish spelling.

Meaning of the name

The first part of the name can be derived from Thor , the Germanic thunder and sky deity, the second from the word Björn , North Germanic for bear or brown (in the broader sense also chief ).
