Tom Kennedy (born August 21, 1960 in St. Louis ) is an American jazz and fusion musician ( double bass , bass guitar ).

Kennedy comes from a family of musicians; his father first worked as a trumpeter; his older brother was the pianist Ray Kennedy . At the age of eight he became acquainted with the double bass, which his brother was to play in the school orchestra, and from the age of nine received regular lessons from Jerry Cherry. As a teenager he attended workshops with Stan Kenton . with whom he also jammed (together with Peter Erskine ) . As a teenager he not only played with local musicians, but also formed a rhythm group with his brother at an early age, the Dizzy Gillespie , Sonny Stitt , Stan Kenton, James Moody , Barney Kessel , Eddie Harris , George Russell , Nat Adderley , Bill Watrous and Freddie Hubbard accompanied at performances in St. Louis. At the age of 17 he switched to the electric bass. Together with his brother he recorded a number of albums as The Kennedy Brothers from 1988 , most recently a Harold Arlen tribute album in 2008 .

After moving to New York City (1984), he joined Steps Ahead in the merger area , where he played with Michael Brecker and Bill Connors . He also worked with Tania Maria and with Didier Lockwood , and later with Don Grolnick , Steve Khan , Randy Brecker , Al Di Meola , Mike Stern , Joe Sample , Frank Gambale , Steve Lukather , David Sanborn , Simon Phillips or Planet X . From 1998 he was part of Dave Weckl's band . He has also performed with Benny Green , Bucky Pizzarelli and Junior Cook .
