action
Martin Naranjo, a widower of Mexican descent living in the United States , is the head chef at his own restaurant. The three grown daughters live in his house: Leticia, the eldest, is a chemistry teacher, the second Carmen became a management consultant after studying business administration, and the youngest, Maribel, is supposed to study first. The women worry about their father. After eating together, they argue about their attitudes towards life in the kitchen until Maribel breaks a plate. The sisters break more plates and then sing together.
Martin meets the widow Hortensia of the same age, who is increasingly interested in the single widower. He also befriends her daughter Yolanda and her granddaughter.
Leticia gets closer to the physical education teacher Orlando Castillo. Soon she will receive love letters that please her very much. After reading a letter, she interrupts a game and kisses the surprised Orlando in public. It turns out that he didn't write the letters at all, they were rather a joke of his students. Orlando comforts Leticia by saying that he would have liked to have written the letters, then he kisses her. Leticia takes Orlando home with her and introduces him to the surprised family as her husband.
Carmen is to become the managing director of a company in Barcelona . Maribel frightens Martin with the announcement that she wants to take a year or two off before studying. One of the cooks, a friend of Martin's, passes out in the restaurant's kitchen. When he returns to the restaurant after a hospital stay, he dies.
During a dinner, Martin says that this time he has something to announce; he wanted to marry again. The present Hortensia expects a marriage proposal, but Martin asks for the hand of her daughter Yolanda. The daughters are delighted after the initial shock, the angry Hortensia insults Martin as a "pervert".
Martin takes Carmen to the airport and says goodbye to her. Soon after, she appears at Martin's house and says she wouldn't fly to Barcelona after all. She is preparing an exclusive meal for him.
Carmen is later seen as the restaurant's new head chef. She entertains the assembled family. Yolanda is pregnant and is expecting a girl.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on August 24, 2001 that the script showed the excessive number of authors. He described Tortilla Soup as a typical family film in which the participants are single at the beginning and married at the end. Ebert wrote that the "good" cast would bring this formula to life; He praised the "magical heat" (magic hot) the presentation of Hector Elizondo .
The Berliner Zeitung described the comedy as "easily digestible food".
“Sensual comedy about family, food and the conflict between the generations, the characters of which are developed in a pattern. As a result, the momentum of the staging is increasingly recognizable as an end in itself. "
