The 5th stage of the Tour de France 2007 on July 12th was 182.5 kilometers long and led the riders from Chablis south through Burgundy , specifically through the departments of Yonne , Nièvre and Saône-et-Loire , to Autun . The stage through the Morvan had a total of eight mountain classifications , including, for the first time during this tour, mountains in the second and third category. Due to its wavy profile, the only low mountain range stage was considered to be one of the most demanding of the entire tour.

Right from the start, the race was very restless and one or more drivers kept trying to break away from the main field. A trio made up of Sylvain Chavanel , William Bonnet and Philippe Gilbert was found around race kilometer 20 . Behind them the Italian Giampaolo Cheula tried to catch up with the trio as a soloist. The lead of the three outliers on the peloton grew quickly to a maximum of 14:45 minutes, while Cheula initially tried in vain to make up the gap of about one and a half minutes on the group of three. Finally he made the connection after 59 kilometers driven. Meanwhile, the teams in the main field began to organize a regular pursuit and shortened the gap significantly. By 60 kilometers from the finish, at the foot of the Haut-Folin , a second category mountain, the lead quartet had shrunk to 3:40 minutes.

In the ascent, the group then split into two, as Cheula and Bonnet could no longer follow the pace of Chavanels and Gilberts. At the summit of the almost 13-kilometer climb, the lead was 1:17 minutes ahead of the pursuers, and the peloton followed another 53 seconds behind. The pursuers were stopped in the descent from the main field, so that only the duo Chavanel / Gilbert remained in front of the field. They defended their lead up to eleven kilometers from the finish before the field passed them on the climb to the Côte de la Croix de la Liberation under the leadership of Rabobank .

Immediately after the merger, some drivers attacked again, but none of them were able to break away decisively. Only Yaroslav Popovych managed to drive out a small gap on the descent. However, after a driving error in a tight left turn, he lost his lead again. So the field drove closed, with David Millar and Laurent Lefèvre in the lead, on the home straight in Autun. There Filippo Pozzato won the sprint ahead of Óscar Freire and Daniele Bennati .

Fabian Cancellara and Wladimir Gussew again defended the lead in the overall and junior ranking. Sylvain Chavanel, who won seven of the eight mountain classifications of the day, took the lead in the classification for the dotted jersey well ahead of his runaway companions Philippe Gilbert and William Bonnet. The lead also changed in the points classification, where Erik Zabel took over the green jersey from Tom Boonen . In the team standings, Team CSC took the lead after only two riders from Team Astana were able to place in the first group.

Alexander Vinokurow , one of the favorites for the overall victory, lost 1:20 minutes after a collision with a motorcycle about 24 kilometers from the finish to his biggest opponents, who reached the finish in the first group. Before that, his team mate Andreas Klöden had also fallen. However, he was no longer behind. Vinokourov suffered bruises and deep abrasions on his right thigh and both knees in his fall, which even had to be sewn. In Klöden the doctors diagnosed a hairline crack in the tailbone . The French Geoffroy Lequatre , who struggled to cross the finish line with a deficit of over 44 minutes despite a bad fall and thus exceeded the waiting period, was not disqualified by the race management due to his combative attitude.
