The 1st stage of the 2007 Tour de France on July 8th was 203 kilometers long and took the riders from the British capital, London, south-east through Kent to Canterbury in south-east England .

After the drivers had made a stopover on Tower Bridge in the neutralized phase , the real start took place in Greenwich , a London suburb. Right at the beginning, a large number of groups tried to initiate a successful escape, but only David Millar managed to break away from the peloton after about seven kilometers. When Millar had gained a slight lead, a quartet of Stéphane Augé , Freddy Bichot , Andrij Hrywko and Aljaksandr Kuschynski took up the chase. Millar's lead on the peloton increased to about five minutes and the pursuers had problems to provide the soloist. They only succeeded in merging after 48 kilometers of racing.

The quintet extended their lead to about six minutes. Then the teams in the main field took up the chase and continuously reduced the gap. After the second intermediate sprint of the day, the lead had shrunk to around 2:30 minutes and Bichot had launched a first attack in the escape group. However, he was caught up again after a short time by his four colleagues. After increasing the pace 50 kilometers from the finish, Hrywko and Millar finally dropped out of the escape group and were overtaken by the main field a little later. With 27 kilometers to go, Augé increased the pace again, which also caused his two opponents to fall behind. Meanwhile, there was a crash in the main field at a narrow point in which the Australian sprinter Robbie McEwen was also involved.

Augé's solo escape finally ended 18 kilometers from the finish and the sprinter teams tried to get themselves into a good starting position for the upcoming mass sprint, while McEwen did not find the connection again after his fall until six kilometers from the finish. In the subsequent mass sprint, McEwen won despite the exhausting chase from Thor Hushovd and Tom Boonen .

In the overall standings, Fabian Cancellara easily defended the leader's jersey. Even Vladimir Gusev in the youth classification and the Astana team in the team competition remained in the lead. After his sprint victory, Robbie McEwen took over the green jersey from Fabian Cancellara, which Andreas Klöden had worn on the stage as his representative. David Millar secured the dotted jersey with a tie with Stéphane Augé because he was better placed in the overall standings.
