The 11th stage of the 2007 Tour de France on July 19 was 182.5 kilometers long and took the riders from Marseille through the southeastern region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur to Montpellier in the southern region of Languedoc-Roussillon . The seventh flat stage had a total of only one mountain classification .

Right at the beginning of the stage after the real start, the first rider, Freddy Bichot, attacked , who a little later received support from Stéphane Augé . However, they fell back into the field after just two kilometers. Shortly thereafter, around 20 drivers left the field, which was soon reduced to nine drivers and was followed by a group of 19. After 25 kilometers, however, the main field caught up with the chasing group again.

As a result, the group of nine, which was made up of David Arroyo , Jens Voigt , Heinrich Haussler , Daniele Bennati , Kanstanzin Siuzou , Sylvain Chavanel , Benoît Vaugrenard , Nick Nuyens and Pierrick Fédrigo , slightly increased their lead, but could not break away significantly. After an attack within the leading group, it disintegrated, which allowed the main field to gradually catch up with the runaways. As the last driver in the group, Chavanel was placed at race kilometer 83.

Only two kilometers later, drivers attacked again. This time Fabian Wegmann , Philippe Gilbert , Xavier Florencio and Dmitri Fofonow separated . A fifth driver, David Millar, caught up with them after 97 kilometers . The quintet pulled away from the field by up to 7:30 minutes before the Astana team increased the pace immensely on a route with a crosswind in the flat Camargue . The high speed and the diagonal wind falling on the field created a wind edge that split the peloton into two parts 71 kilometers from the finish in Montpellier. In the second part of the field there were some well-known drivers with Christophe Moreau , Erik Zabel , Thor Hushovd , Tadej Valjavec and Stefan Schumacher . The new situation meant that the sprinter teams also got involved in the management work of the first large group in order to increase the lead over the second group. Due to the high speed, the lead of the five outliers quickly decreased. While the distance between the two large groups was about two minutes, the breakaway was caught 38 kilometers from the finish.

The first peloton maintained the pace even after the merger and increased the lead over the group around Moreau and Zabel to 2:44 minutes up to five kilometers from the finish. A kilometer later attacked Alexander Vinokurow , who tried to reach the goal as a soloist, but what the other teams prevented. For the first time since the 6th stage the peloton's mass sprint in front of the Stade de la Mosson was about to win, which was overshadowed by a fall one kilometer from the finish. The victory secured the Robert Hunter , who became the first South Africans could even win a Tour stage, in front of Fabian Cancellara and Murilo Fischer . The second field crossed the finish line 3:20 minutes behind. The average speed of the winner was a record-breaking 48.061 km / h.

As in the previous day, there were no changes at the top in the individual ratings. Team CSC also remained in the lead in the team classification . Only among the top ten drivers in the overall standings there were some changes, as Christophe Moreau only crossed the finish line in the second group and dropped from sixth to 14th place. In addition, stage winner Robert Hunter took second place in the ranking for the green jersey.

After the two German public television stations Das Erste and ZDF withdrew from live reporting the day before, the private broadcaster Sat.1 acquired the broadcasting rights at short notice and showed the stage live.
