The 15th stage of the 2007 Tour de France on July 23 was 196 kilometers long and took the riders from Foix through the south-western region of Midi-Pyrénées to Loudenvielle-Le Louron . The sixth mountain stage had a total of five mountain ratings , including one of the highest categories (HC) with the Port de Balès , which was tackled for the first time as part of a tour of France.
As in the previous mountain stages, the first riders attacked at the beginning of the stage and tried to break away from the peloton. After a top group of 20 failed to initiate a successful escape, a new group formed on the ascent to Col de Port , but it disintegrated as the ascent progressed. Ultimately, for the time being remained Gorka Verdugo at the front of the race, the ten rider strong group with Alexandre Vinokourov , Juan José Cobo , Denis Menshov , David Arroyo , Bernhard Kohl , Manuel Beltrán , Stéphane Goubert , Johann Tschopp , Juan Manuel Garate and John Gadret followed . They caught Verdugo before the summit, which put eleven drivers in the lead. However, the lead over the main field at the summit was only about half a minute.
In the descent, Tschopp and Kohl briefly broke away from their group, which had meanwhile grown to 23 drivers, as Kim Kirchen , George Hincapie and Haimar Zubeldia , among others , had caught up in the descent. The two outliers, Kohl and Tschopp, were caught again by the pursuers at race kilometer 55. As a result, the lead of the 25 outliers on the peloton quickly increased to over eight minutes and did not decrease either on the ascent to the Col du Portet d'Aspet or the Col de Menté , although the group reached the culmination point in each case.
Together, the breakaway group entered the ascent to Port de Balès before Iñigo Landaluze increased the pace and blew the group up. Only four drivers could follow him , namely Johann Tschopp, Bernhard Kohl, David Arroyo and Sergei Iwanow . A little later, with Denis Menschow, a sixth driver caught up with the leaders, while Ivanov dropped back shortly afterwards to lead the pursuers with his captain Vinokurow forward. With the help of Ivanov, several drivers made it back to the top, whereupon Tschopp attacked in the group and pulled away. Meanwhile, Andrei Kaschetschkin had also launched an attack from the main field, but none followed, as did Tschopp. However, the pace had increased noticeably, leaving only about 20 drivers in pursuit of Kashechkin. Three kilometers below the summit, Kim Kirchen was able to catch up with Johann Tschopp and distance him a few hundred meters from the summit. Kaschetschkin had also been overtaken by the favorite group in the meantime. Kirchen finally reached the summit just before Tschopp and Arroyo, who had meanwhile broken away from the chasing group. The chasing group arrived 45 seconds after Kirchen at the culmination point, the favorites group followed with a gap of 6:45 minutes.
At the beginning of the descent, Arroyo caught up with the leading Kirchen, and Tschopp joined them shortly afterwards, but fell back in the first hundred meters of the ascent to Col de Peyresourde and was overtaken by Vinokurow, Cobo, Gárate and Zubeldia . After increasing the pace, Gárate had to let go, while the remaining three drivers caught up to the top of the race. As a result, the riders in the breakaway group attacked again and again, but no one was able to break away, only Arroyo and Kirchen had to be demolished. Vinokurow then increased the pace again and took the lead as a soloist 15 kilometers from the finish, while his opponents behind were now also on the road as soloists. Vinokurow reached the last summit of the day with 29 seconds ahead of Kirchen and Zubeldia and started the 11.5 kilometer descent to Loudenvielle-Le Louron. In the main field the favorites watched each other before Alberto Contador attacked and only Rasmussen could follow again. They arrived at the Peyresourde 5:27 minutes behind , the group with Andreas Klöden , Cadel Evans and Levi Leipheimer another 41 seconds behind.
After the clear victory in the individual time trial on the 13th stage and the slump on the 14th stage , Alexander Vinokurow finally secured his second stage victory with 50 seconds ahead of Kim Kirchen and Haimar Zubeldia. Contador and Rasmussen crossed the finish line in tenth and eleventh place, 5:31 minutes behind. The group around Klöden, Evans and Leipheimer followed 6:27 minutes behind.
There were no changes in the top positions in the individual rankings, but the Astana team took over the lead in the team rankings again.
As in the 13th stage , Alexander Vinokurow was also proven to have been doping with foreign blood after winning this stage .
