The 14th stage of the Tour de France 2007 on July 22nd was 197 kilometers long and took the riders from Mazamet through the southwestern region of Midi-Pyrénées to the Pyrenees on the Plateau de Beille . The fifth mountain stage had a total of three mountain ratings , including, with the Port de Pailhères and the final ascent to the Plateau de Beille , two mountains of the highest category (HC) and was considered the “queen's stage” of the Pyrenees passage.

The section started right at the beginning with the nine-kilometer ascent to the Côte de Saint-Sarraille , in which several groups tried unsuccessfully to break away because the main field kept doing follow-up work. In the descent that followed after the mountain classification, a group consisting of 15 riders again pulled away. Behind them there was initially a group of twelve chasing packs, including the yellow jersey Michael Rasmussen , followed by the peloton. At 19.5 km, the pursuers caught up with the leaders, putting 27 drivers in the lead, including Rasmussen, Jaroslaw Popowytsch , Kim Kirchen , Jens Voigt , Mauricio Soler , Juan Manuel Gárate and David de la Fuente . Shortly after the group merged, Rubén Pérez withdrew from this , who was followed a little later by Antonio Colom , Amets Txurruka , Aljaksandr Kuschynski , Carlos Barredo and José Iván Gutiérrez . The remaining 21 riders had meanwhile fallen back into the peloton due to the speed work of the Predictor-Lotto team .

In the slightly uphill section to Port de Pailhères , the drivers of the main field let the sextet pull. By race kilometer 63, the outliers increased their lead to 11:20 minutes, before the peloton increased the speed and reduced the gap. At the foot of the ascent to Port de Pailhères , after driving 130 kilometers, the lead group still had a lead of around 6:30 minutes, with the teams in the main field largely controlling the race.

As the first of the outliers, Belarusian Kuschynski had to let his competitors pull away in the bends of the Pailhères , who was on the tour's program for the third time after 2003 and 2005 , whereby five Spaniards were at the top of the race in the Franco-Spanish border region. Pérez and Txurruka von Euskaltel-Euskadi repeatedly pushed the pace in the leading group and tried to lure their three fellow competitors out of the reserve. In the end, only the two Euskaltel riders and Colom remained in the lead, while the peloton had shrunk drastically and Christophe Moreau , Fränk Schleck , Mikel Astarloza , Linus Gerdemann , Juan José Cobo , Iban Mayo and Alexander Vinokurow , among others, had fallen behind. As a result, Gutiérrez was able to catch up with the leading group again and together with the other three riders reached the summit with a 2:55 advantage over the chasing group for the yellow jersey, which was still about 25 riders strong, in the 34-kilometer descent to Les Cabannes but replenished.

At the beginning of the ascent to the Plateau de Beille , which was the destination of a stage for the fourth time, 16 kilometers from the finish, the lead of the outliers had shrunk to 2:32 minutes and Barredo had been able to catch up with his four competitors. Immediately after leaving Les Cabannes, Barredo and Pérez lost their connection in the leading group, while the first riders in the chasing group also had to let go, as the Rabobank team drove into the mountain at full speed. Colom was then the first of the three leaders to attack and pull away. In the meantime the chasing group had reduced to ten drivers. It included Michael Rasmussen, Jaroslaw Popowytsch, Mauricio Soler, Michael Boogerd , Cadel Evans , Andreas Klöden , Andrei Kaschetschkin , Carlos Sastre , Alberto Contador and Levi Leipheimer . They subsequently caught up with the outliers, with the exception of Colom. When Boogerd, Rasmussen's last helper, dropped out of management work, Popowytsch took over the pace for his captains Contador and Leipheimer. As the next driver, Klöden could no longer keep up the pace, and after Popowytsch had run out of strength, Leipheimer and Contador attacked, whose attacks Rasmussen countered a little later. The attacks left Rasmussen, Contador, Evans, Leipheimer, Sastre and Soler alone in the pursuit. Another attack by Soler brought Leipheimer and Sastre into trouble for a short time. Then Contador attacked and only Rasmussen was able to keep up with the pace. About 3.4 kilometers from the finish, the Contador-Rasmussen duo then overtook the last runaway and leader Colom. Ultimately, Alberto Contador secured his first stage win in the sprint against Michael Rasmussen. Maurico Soler crossed the finish line in third place, 38 seconds behind the winner. Andreas Klöden and Cadel Evans came together in sixth and seventh stages, 1:52 minutes behind on the plateau. Alexander Vinokurow crossed the finish line almost half an hour after Contador and was finally able to bury his hopes for overall victory.

In the overall standings, Michael Rasmussen kept the lead with a 2:23 minute lead over Alberto Contador, who was also able to extend his lead in the junior class, and 3:04 minutes over Cadel Evans. In the mountain classification, Rasmussen defended his lead just over Maurico Soler, while Tom Boonen remained in the lead in the classification for the green jersey. The top position in the team standings was taken by Discovery Channel .
