The 6th stage of the Tour de France 2007 on July 13th was 199.5 kilometers long and led the riders from Semur-en-Auxois south through Bourgogne , specifically through the departments of Côte-d'Or , Saône-et-Loire and Ain , to Bourg-en-Bresse in the Rhône-Alpes region . The fifth flat stage of the tour had a total of two mountain classifications in the fourth category.
Early on, after two kilometers, the Briton Bradley Wiggins set himself apart from the main field as a soloist. Wiggins quickly increased his lead and at race kilometer 11 Andrij Hrywko tried to catch up with him with another attack from the field. After a short time, however, the Ukrainian broke off the attempt and fell back into the field. In the meantime, the outlier expanded its lead over the peloton to almost 18 minutes. Then, when the field started chasing, under the direction of Quick Step and CSC , the gap began to narrow. By the second intermediate sprint at 127 km, the lead had shrunk to 3:10 minutes, before at the culmination point of the second mountain classification of the day, 61.5 kilometers from the finish line, the lead had increased again to 5:05 minutes. Only when there were 50 kilometers left did the peloton start to catch up and shorten the gap again, which was also helped by a broken spoke on Wiggins' bike. With the teams from Predictor-Lotto , Crédit Agricole , T-Mobile , Gerolsteiner and Milram at the head of the field, who dictated the distance to Wiggins at will, the attempt to escape ended seven kilometers from the finish.
After that, despite a rather restrained pace in the peloton, there were no more attacks until the entrance to the home straight in Bourg-en-Bresse, which was also due to the sometimes violent headwind. In the mass sprint of the field, Tom Boonen secured the day's victory from Óscar Freire and Erik Zabel .
Once again, there were no changes to the leadership position in the overall, junior and mountain ratings. Team CSC also defended its narrow lead in the team competition. Only in the points evaluation did Tom Boonen take the lead again after only one day thanks to the credits during the intermediate sprints and in the stage finals.
