The 7th stage of the Tour de France 2007 on July 14th, the French national holiday , was 197.5 kilometers long and led the riders from Bourg-en-Bresse eastwards through the southeastern Rhône-Alpes region , specifically through the Ain and Départements Haute-Savoie , to Le Grand-Bornand in the Alps . The first mountain stage of the tour featured a total of four mountain classifications, including the Col de la Colombière, the first major obstacle for the drivers.
As expected, the stage began restlessly with numerous attempts to break away. Nevertheless, the peloton completed the first sprint at 16.5 kilometers. After that, larger groups tried to break away again, but they were soon caught up again by the main field. The large peloton only disintegrated as the first mountain classification climbed, and several riders kept coming together trying to initiate a successful escape.
After driving more than 40 kilometers of racing, a seven-man breakaway group formed consisting of Paolo Savoldelli , Linus Gerdemann , Benoît Vaugrenard , Rubén Pérez , Egoi Martínez , Laurent Lefèvre and Dmitri Fofonow . A little later, with David de la Fuente and Iñigo Landaluze, two more drivers joined the leading group. Behind them, a group of three followed by José Iván Gutiérrez , Juan Antonio Flecha and Bram Tankink and another group of four with the drivers Fabian Wegmann , Martin Elmiger , Jérôme Pineau and Igor Antón . Both chasing groups subsequently caught up with the nine leaders, but Antón had dropped back from the second chasing group, so that finally 15 drivers were ahead of the main field. The group's lead quickly increased to 8:30 minutes before the field, which had initially not done any follow-up work, took up the chase under the direction of Predictor-Lotto and initially slowly narrowed and then consolidated the gap. Up to the foot of the ascent to Col de la Colombière, the lead was just under five minutes before Pérez and Tankink were able to pull away slightly in the leading group, but were immediately replaced by the rest of the drivers.
In the ascent, the escape group then finally disintegrated after Gutiérrez and de la Fuente had attacked and some drivers fell back. Gerdemann joined the management duo a little later. When another driver, Fofonow, came along, Gerdemann accelerated the pace and, with Fofonow, took the lead in the race. Meanwhile, the main group around the favorites, in which Rabobank did the pace work, became smaller and smaller. 20 kilometers from the finish and a little more than five kilometers below the summit, Gerdemann attacked again and was able to shake off his opponent, who was soon overtaken by Landaluze and de la Fuente. At the culmination point, the German was 18 seconds ahead of his closest rival, the Spaniard Landaluze, who in turn was followed by his compatriot de la Fuente. The favorites group reached the summit 3:20 minutes behind.
In the 14.5-kilometer descent down to Le Grand-Bornand , Linus Gerdemann extended his lead over Landaluze again and in the end secured his first stage win on his first tour of France. In the other places followed Iñigo Landaluze, 40 seconds behind, and David de la Fuente, another 59 seconds back. The group with all the favorites crossed the finish line 3:38 minutes after Gerdemann.
With his victory and the large lead over the main field, Gerdemann took the lead in the overall standings with 1:24 minutes ahead of the new, second-placed Iñigo Landaluze. He also secured the lead in the junior competition. Fabian Cancellara , who has been wearing the yellow jersey since the prologue , reached the finish line 22 minutes behind Gerdemann and fell far behind in the overall standings. In the mountain classification and points classification, Sylvain Chavanel and Tom Boonen kept their respective jerseys. The T-Mobile team took the lead in the team classification .
