The 8th stage of the Tour de France 2007 on July 15 was 165 kilometers long and took the riders from Le Grand-Bornand southeast through the southeast region of Rhône-Alpes , in particular through the Haute-Savoie and Savoie departments , to Tignes . The second mountain stage through the Alps had six mountain ratings . With the final climb to Tignes, the first mountain arrival of this year's tour was waiting for the riders.

The stage, peppered with six mountain ratings, began again very uneasily. Initially, Stefan Schumacher , Lilian Jégou , Stéphane Augé , Alexander Jefimkin and Marcel Sieberg formed a five-man breakaway group. They reached the first mountain classification on the Col du Marais at 15.5 kilometers with a lead of just 20 seconds . Together, the quintet also started the climb to the Côte du Bouchet Mont-Charvin , but Sieberg and Jégou fell back first and a little later Augé and Jefimkin too. Behind the sole leader, Schumacher, a new group of pursuers formed, which reached the culmination point just behind him.

On the descent, Thomas Voeckler then took the lead in the race. He was followed by a well-known 15-person chasing group, which included Schumacher, Jens Voigt , David Millar , George Hincapie , Bernhard Kohl , Michael Rogers , Juan Manuel Gárate and Sandy Casar . She sat down after 23 kilometers and caught up with Voeckler on the climb to the Col de Tamié . So, after the chasing group had increased a bit, 20 drivers were in the lead. However, the main field with the favorites only gave the breakaway group a small lead, which increased to a maximum of two minutes. Nevertheless, the peloton kept trying to form smaller chase groups.

At the foot of the 20-kilometer ascent to the Cormet de Roselend, there were still 18 riders in the lead group, which then fell apart on the ascent. Meanwhile, Michael Rasmussen attacked from the peloton, followed by several drivers, while Bernhard Kohl was now alone in the breakaway group after increasing the speed. A group of five formed behind Kohl around Michael Rasmussen, who had caught up with some of the riders in the former top group. As a result, Kohl had to pay tribute to his arrival and was soon overtaken by the group around Rasmussen and Rogers. A group of six finally reached the summit with drivers Michael Rasmussen, Michael Rogers, Bernhard Kohl, David Arroyo , Stéphane Goubert and Antonio Colom . They were followed by a group of seven, 1:15 minutes behind, and another group of four, 3:44 minutes behind. With Christophe Le Mével, there was still a single driver between the leading group and the first chasing group. The deficit of the main field had meanwhile increased to 5:07 minutes.

On the descent from the Cormet de Roselend , Arroyo and Rogers fell in a left turn, which briefly reduced the leading group to four drivers. At the end of the descent, Arroyo and Rogers had found the connection again, but Rogers was the first rider up to Montée d'Hauteville who could no longer follow Rasmussen's pace. Kohl and Goubert also had to let the three remaining drivers go a little later. The Australian Rogers even gave up the race a little later in tears. Rasmussen and his two comrades-in-arms reached the summit together, with Rasmussen doing the leading work alone and increasing the group's lead to 6:15 minutes. The chasing group was 4:55 minutes behind. When the final climb to Tignes was on, Arroyo fell back and, moments later, Colom too, leaving Rasmussen alone in the lead. In the peloton, Christophe Moreau was the first from the extended circle of favorites to launch a serious attack. After a short time, Iban Mayo , Alejandro Valverde , Cadel Evans , Jaroslaw Popowytsch , Alberto Contador , Fränk Schleck and Andrei Kaschetschkin caught up with him. Andreas Klöden and Alexander Vinokurow , who were weakened by their falls on the 5th stage , had no chance to follow the pace of the other riders for the time being. However, since the group around Moreau initially disagreed, Mayo launched another attack and was able to break away easily. A little later, however, the chase group caught up with him again. So there was initially a group of eight in the pursuit of the leader Rasmussen, but after Moreau stepped up the pace, they shrank to seven drivers because Popowytsch could no longer follow. However, further tightening of the pace by Valverde and Moreau did not bring any further selection and only led to the fact that Rasmussen was able to keep the gap constant at four minutes and the gap to the group around Klöden and Vinokurow was no greater than a minute. However, when Carlos Sastre and Denis Menschow attacked in the Klöden-Vinokurow group, it disintegrated, while the group around Moreau had shrunk to six drivers after a defect at Contador. While the favorites were still watching each other, Michael Rasmussen reached the finish as a soloist and won the stage 2:47 minutes ahead of Iban Mayo and 3:12 minutes ahead of Alejandro Valverde, who won the sprint. Vinokurow reached the goal together and with great help from Klöden, 4:29 minutes behind. Three drivers, including the two sprinters Robbie McEwen and Danilo Napolitano , crossed the finish line well after the calculated time limit of 40:34 minutes and were consequently disqualified. The tour ended for them.

Michael Rasmussen took over the yellow jersey from Linus Gerdemann , who crossed the finish line 5:05 minutes behind and fell back to second place, but defended the white jersey. In addition, Rasmussen secured the lead in the mountain classification with a clear lead over the Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel . In the green jersey, Belgian Tom Boonen maintained his lead and the Rabobank team replaced the T-Mobile team at the top of the team standings after just one day .

After the race, a serious accident occurred between the German Patrik Sinkewitz from the T-Mobile team and a spectator. Sinkewitz, who was riding his racing bike without a helmet on the way to the team hotel, collided with a spectator at full speed. While Sinkewitz, who was not available immediately after the accident, was brought to the hospital with an open nose and suspected concussion , the viewer from Luxembourg lost consciousness and fell into a coma. He was also taken to a nearby hospital by rescue helicopter.
