The 12th stage of the Tour de France 2007 on July 20th was 178.5 kilometers long and took the riders from Montpellier through the southern region of Languedoc-Roussillon to Castres in the south-western region of Midi-Pyrénées . The fourth mountain stage had a total of four mountain ratings , with the stage starting relatively flat, but ending with the ascent to Montée de la Jeante in a demanding manner.

On the undulating stage, after two kilometers of racing, Sylvain Chavanel and Fabian Wegmann pulled away from the field, followed a little later by Axel Merckx , Iñaki Isasi , Daniel Navarro , Félix Cárdenas and Ralf Grabsch . Their breakaway attempt ended prematurely after only 15 kilometers at the top. After the unsuccessful escape attempt, riders or smaller groups attacked again and again, but due to the high speed in the peloton, no one was able to break away over a long period of time.

It was only after driving 57 kilometers that the duo Amets Txurruka and Pierrick Fédrigo managed to initiate a successful escape. A chasing group that had formed shortly after the duo's attack was quickly put back before the German Marcus Burghardt broke away from the field as a soloist and, like the two leaders, was able to quickly expand the lead over the main field. The leading duo had a maximum lead over the peloton, 85 kilometers from the finish, at 11:25 minutes before the Liquigas team organized the pursuit. In between, Burghardt drove with a constant gap of around six to 6:30 minutes on the leaders. Up to the foot of the Montée de la Jeante , 58 kilometers from the finish, the peloton reduced the gap to the top of the race to 5:12 minutes, while the sole pursuer Burghardt broke off the breakaway attempt and dropped back into the field at 113.5 kilometers.

On the ascent, Fédrigo and Txurruka were able to keep their lead largely constant, in contrast to the ride in the flat section, and reached the summit with a difference of 4:58 minutes. However, when the Lampre team and Française des Jeux took over the pace work on the high plateau of Montée de la Jeante , the lead melted again, as before on the plain. Finally the breakaway attempt ended one kilometer from the finish. In the subsequent mass sprint, Tom Boonen secured his second day's success in the course of the tour, just ahead of his worst competitors for the green jersey, Erik Zabel and Robert Hunter .

Once again, there were no changes to the top positions in the individual ratings. Team CSC also remained in the lead in the team classification .

After Patrik Sinkewitz's doping case had already come to light on the morning before the 10th stage , it was announced on the evening before the 12th stage that Michael Rasmussen, who was leading the overall standings at the time, had been excluded from the national team by the cycling association of his home country and thus was suspended for participation in the 2007 road cycling championship in Stuttgart and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . Rasmussen had several times not given his whereabouts for possible unannounced doping tests during training. This suspicious behavior made the wearer of the yellow jersey suspected of doping. However, the tour organizers around Christian Prudhomme sensed an intrigue of the UCI cycling world association around the conflict between the ASO and the UCI ProTour organization , as the world association had been aware of the incidents since the end of June.
