UCI Road World Championships 2007

The 74th UCI Road World Championships 2007 took place from September 25th to 30th in Stuttgart . The road cycling world championship was last held there in 1991 .

A total of six decisions were made in the individual time trial and road race disciplines as well as in the women, men and men U23. At world championships , the drivers do not compete for their sponsors as usual, but drive in national teams. The strongest nations - calculated according to a rating scheme that takes into account the successes in the last international competitions - are allowed to start with up to nine drivers.

The races took place on circuits in the west of Stuttgart between the exhibition grounds at Killesberg and the Stuttgart-West , Botnang and Feuerbach districts. The start and finish were at the exhibition center.

Road racing

The circuit of the three road races was 19.1 kilometers long and had an altitude difference of 405 meters . It first led up to the Kräherwald before a loop was made over the Lenzhalde and Herdweg. The latter, with a length of 600 meters and a maximum gradient of 13 percent, was the most difficult climb. We continued up to the Botnanger Sattel, where the racers drove another loop. This led down Botnanger Strasse and up again via Herderstrasse and Rotenwaldstrasse to the highest point of the route at the foot of the Birkenkopf , then down Geißeichstrasse again to the Botnanger Sattel. From here it went down to Botnang and through the valley of the Feuerbach into the district of the same name. After the Stuttgarter Straße there was a final ascent of 80 meters in altitude via Tunnel-, Siemens-, Maybach- and Stresemannstraße back to the exhibition center.

The course was lapped 14 times in the men's road race, seven times in the women and nine times in the U23 race.

Individual time trial

In the individual time trials, the two loops via Lenzhalde / Herdweg and Herderstraße were omitted, and in Feuerbach the route changed somewhat, it ran through Grazer Straße, Oswald-Hesse-Straße, Rüdiger-, Heide- and Alarichstraße. In the U23 race, there was also a branch line that was driven there and back; These were Geißeichstrasse, Rotenwaldstrasse and Wildparkstrasse up to the driveway on Vaihinger Landstrasse. In the men's race, this branch stretch was extended to the ascent to the Bergheimer Steige.

The respective lap was completed twice, so that the women had a length of 25.1 kilometers with 415 meters of altitude; for the U23 men it was 38.1 kilometers and 670 meters in altitude and for the men 44.9 kilometers and 713 meters in altitude.

In the 44.9 kilometer individual time trial, the Swiss Fabian Cancellara defended the title he had won last year with a time of 55:41 minutes (48.375 km / h). On the other podium places followed the Hungarian László Bodrogi 52 seconds behind and the surprisingly strong Dutch Stef Clement another six seconds back.

The two German starters Bert Grabsch and Sebastian Lang just missed the medal ranks with places 4 and 5, but ensured a strong team result.

In the 25.1 kilometer individual time trial for women, Hanka Kupfernagel secured the host's first gold medal in the world championship. After she was the tenth of a total of 49 starters on the track, it took almost two hours before she could celebrate winning the title. Kupfernagel had set the fastest time at all intermediate time measurement points, but had to wait until the end until the final decision, as the favorites were the last to go out on the track.

The German finally won with a time of 34:43 minutes (43.432 km / h) ahead of the defending champion Kristin Armstrong , who was 24 seconds behind, and Christiane Soeder , who was born in Germany but started for Austria . The Americans, who took 2nd, 4th, and 5th place, and the Swiss Priska Doppmann and Karin Thürig in sixth and ninth place were particularly strong .

The second German starter Charlotte Becker reached the finish line in 18th place.

The 38.1-kilometer individual time trial for which 70 riders had registered, all of whom reached the finish, was dominated by the Dutchman Lars Boom . After Mikhail Ignatjew, who later came second, had set the best time at the first split-time measurement after 11.7 kilometers, Boom took over the lead of the race and experienced a small lead that he was able to defend to the finish. Boom reached the goal with a time of 48:58 minutes (46.906 km / h) and secured his first world title. Last year's runner-up Michail Ignatjew won the silver medal again, nine seconds behind, and Frenchman Jérôme Coppel won bronze, just as in 2006, 46 seconds behind.

The two German starters, Marcel Kittel and Stefan Schäfer , disappointed with places 18 and 24, each more than two minutes behind the winner.

doping

There was already criticism of the road cycling world championship in Stuttgart in advance because the reigning road cycling world champion Paolo Bettini had not signed the UCI declaration of honor on doping without reservation and the Italian cycling association nominated him anyway.

After the organizing committee of the World Cup had requested an injunction from the regional court to refuse Bettini to start, but this was not issued, he was finally able to start.

In fact, Bettini had signed the statement with reservations. Literally it says in his declaration:

"It is accordingly declared to have signed the aforementioned declaration of honor against the background of the concerns and within the limits stated above."

Another starter who was criticized was the Spaniard Alejandro Valverde , who was nominated by his association, although his name is said to appear in the investigation documents of the doping scandal surrounding doping doctor Fuentes . This case was heard before the International Court of Justice (CAS) until the end and ended with a start permit for the Spaniard. A decision to start the Australian Allan Davis , also a suspected customer of Fuentes, should be made on September 28th before the CAS.
