Race course

The escape group of the 13th stage, u. a. with Wilco Kelderman (TLJ), Alexandre Geniez (FDJ) and Cyril Gautier (EUC) (from left to right)

After the start, Alexandre Geniez , Thomas De Gendt , Cyril Gautier and Wilco Kelderman attempted to escape. A little later, Nathan Haas and Pierre-Luc Périchon joined them, so that six drivers ran away. The lead on the field leveled off at around four minutes. De Gendt won the intermediate sprint, André Greipel was the first in the main field and was thus again ahead of Peter Sagan in the virtual points classification . In the following, the follow-up work in the field was not consistent, in between an increase in pace caused the peloton to tear apart. The lead of the outliers decreased only slowly and was 30 kilometers from the finish line at about two minutes.

About 15 kilometers from the finish, Cyril Gautier and Wilco Kelderman attacked from the top group, only De Gendt could follow. In the peloton the pace was now higher, the lead of the three remaining escapees was seven kilometers before the end of half a minute. In the end, Kelderman tried it alone, but was caught by the field. From this situation the Belgian Greg Van Avermaet won ahead of Peter Sagan and Jan Bakelants . With the points at the stage finish, Sagan was able to defend the green jersey .

During the stage, last year's runner-up Jean-Christophe Péraud had a hard crash and crossed the finish line more than six minutes behind.
