Tsunami (Original: Haeundae ) is a South Korean feature film directed by Yoon Je-kyun from 2009 . The film is the first ever South Korean disaster film to be marketed.

action

Haeundae Beach is located in Busan , in the southeast of South Korea , and attracts millions of tourists every year. Man-sik lives there with his mother, brother and little son right by the sea, where his mother runs a restaurant. Yeon-hee lives nearby, runs an unlicensed restaurant and is constantly being verbally and physically assaulted by Man-sik's mother. Man-sik loves her, but cannot confess his love to her because he was responsible for the death of her father in the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean by mistake . Another character is Dong-choon, an unemployed loser who almost drives Man-sik's son on the wrong track.

The scientist Hwi Kim warns of the impending danger from so-called megatsunamis. Nobody wants to believe him, since Korea is considered earthquake-free and the Japanese would be more affected by tsunamis . After the meeting, he runs into his ex-wife Ji-min, who has moved to Korea with her new boyfriend and young daughter. The girl does not know that Hwi is her father. Ji-min insists that she shouldn't find out so as not to confuse her. Hwi reluctantly gives in.

At the same time, the wealthy student Hee-mi falls off the coast of the yacht of a boy she met on the beach. Hyeong-sik, Man-sik's brother, who works as a lifeguard, saves them. Both hurt each other, which is why they meet again because she wants to report him. Instead, they get closer and a romance develops between them. But Hee-mi's new acquaintance wants to sabotage the relationship in order to have it to himself.

Man-sik and many others want to turn against his uncle's new building project. At the same time, he finally wants to bring himself to confess his love to Yeon-hee and propose to her. He asked for her hand at a fireworks display to celebrate an expo. She says she'll put a red rag on the outside wall if she agrees. Meanwhile, the seaquakes in the Sea of Japan are increasing, moving ever further towards Korea and getting stronger and stronger. Hyeong-sik is attacked and humiliated by several boys who persuade him that Hee-mi is engaged. Offended, he breaks up with her.

The next day, Hwi wants to get the authorities to evacuate the city and the beach. However, his warnings go unheeded. Man-sik learns that Dong-choon told Yeon-hee the truth about her father's death. Man-sik gets so angry that he tries to attack Dong-choon when a bird falls from the sky and smashes into Dong-choon's windshield. Meanwhile, the disappointed Yeon-hee sinks the red rag in the bay. Dong-choon's mother wants to help her irresponsible son and buy him shoes for an interview. Man-sik's mother and son are in the taxi on Gwangan Bridge, where Dong-choon is also on the way. Suddenly an earthquake shook the city. A mountain flank collapses on an island, triggering a tsunami that rushes towards the Korean coast at 800 km / h. The sirens wail in Busan, but only when the water receded on the beach did the people start to flee. Man-sik, who is about to speak to Yeon-hee, escapes with her through the city.

Only a few minutes later, a tidal wave around 100 meters high rolls over the beach and downtown, washing thousands to their deaths. Man-sik and Yeon-hee barely survive while everyone in their vicinity is electrocuted. Dong-choon survived on the bridge and was able to escape before a tanker lying on the bridge destroyed it in an explosion. He is washed into the sea, where he can save himself and Man-sik's family on a container. Man-sik and Yeon-hee survive on two lampposts when Man-sik's uncle is swept away by a floating billboard. Hyeong-sik is in the helicopter looking for Hee-mi, who was dragged along on a lonely yacht excursion by her acquaintance. Hyeong-sik manages to save both of them in the helicopter, but remains himself in the stormy seas, where he drowns. Hwi was able to save his daughter from the flooded hotel room and brings her to the roof. Ji-min, who is about to drown in the elevator, is rescued by a hotel employee. She runs to the roof, where she finds her daughter and Hwi. When a second, even bigger wave rushes towards her, Hwi confesses that he is her father before she is rescued by a helicopter. Shortly afterwards, Hwi and Ji-min are killed by the wave.

At the funeral service for the dead, Man-sik and his family remember his brother. Hee-mi, who was given a watch by Hyeong-sik before his death, bursts into tears. Dong-choon is made an honorary citizen for rescuing 13 people, but is shattered by guilt that his mother might still be alive if he had just gone to the interview without complaining that he had no shoes for it. Hwi's daughter meets Man-sik's son on the beach and befriends him before going back to her grandmother, who she now lives with. Yeon-hee is cleaning up the rubble of her place when she finds the red cloth to hang up. Man-sik takes the handkerchief from her and lets it fly.

The last shot shows the ruined Busan and the rubble littered Haeundae Beach in an atmosphere that suggests a better future.
