Tuomo Uusitalo (* 1986 in Tampere ) is a Finnish jazz musician ( piano , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Tuomo Uusitalo started playing the piano at the age of six. As a teenager he played different types of music from classical to pop / rock and soon became fascinated by jazz and the possibilities of spontaneous improvisation. During his music studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz , he had the opportunity to work with jazz musicians such as Bob Brookmeyer , Billy Hart , Curtis Fuller , Jim Rotondi and Jimmy Cobb . Since 2007 he has played and toured throughout Europe as a solo pianist and with various ensembles from piano trios to big bands .

After graduating with honors from the University of Graz in 2012, he moved to New York City, where he has lived since then. He appears regularly in clubs and venues in the city, u. a. in jazz clubs like Smalls , Mezzrow, Fat Cat , Zinc Bar , Cornelia Street Cafe , Shapeshifter Lab , Cleopatra's Needle, Garage, University of the Streets and Arturo's. During his time in New York he played with jazz musicians such as Curtis Lundy , Tyler Mitchell , David Schnitter , Jeff Hirshfield , Johnny O'Neal , Greg Bandy . Philip Harper , Ulysses Owens Jr. , Dayna Stephens , Obed Calvaire , Rich Perry , Josh Evans , Brandon Lewis , Gerry Gibbs , Luques Curtis, and Alexander Claffy .

His debut album Trio won the 2012 Downbeat Student Music Award as “best small jazz ensemble”. In the same year he also won the same award for “best Latin group” with the Marco Antonio Da Costa Group. In 2013 he was awarded the prestigious Sir Roland Hanna Award from the City University of New York .

In 2015 he recorded his debut album Love Song with Tivon Pennicott (as a guest musician), Myles Sloniker (bass) and Itay Morchi (drums) ; In 2018, the same line-up, this time with Chris Cheek as a guest musician, the production Stories from Here and There ( Fresh Sound New Talent ). In the field of jazz he was involved in four recording sessions between 2015 and 2018. In 2013 he had the opportunity to perform his original compositions at the Montreal Jazz Festival , where he was part of the Jazz Composers series of events. In 2014 he toured the USA and Canada with the One and Only Tommy Dorsey Orchestra ( Ghost Band ).
