Twarditsa ( Bulgarian Твърдица , literally strong ) is a village in the municipality and district / Oblast Burgas in southeastern Bulgaria .

location

Twardiza is located in the eastern part of the Upper Thracian Plain, around 15 km southwest of the Burgas community center near Lake Burgas and around 2 km north of the village of Marinka .

history

In 1453 the entire region came under the rule of the Ottoman Turks as one of the last in today's Bulgaria .

In the area of today's village there was a settlement called Archijanli (Bulgarian Архиянли) in the 15th century. This settlement was first mentioned in an Ottoman register from 1543, which described the settlement of the Yörüken in this area. In 1676 the place was mentioned again in an Ottoman register with a population between 100 and 150 inhabitants. At that time Archijanli belonged to the Kaza Anchialo .

A letter from the people of Archijanli has survived from 1807 in which they asked the Ottoman authorities to do something against the gangs (Kırcali) moving through the country. In 1864, however, Archijanli is only mentioned in Ottoman documents as Tschiflik (from Turkish Çiftlik for "country house") in Kaza Burgas. After Bulgaria was liberated from Ottoman rule in 1878, the later Bulgarian Prime Minister Stefan Stambolow bought the 30,000 hectare Tschiflik from emigrating Turks.

In the period after the liberation and regaining of independence, Bulgarian refugees from the areas of Thrace and Macedonia still under Turkish rule settled in the Burgas region ( Thracian Bulgarians ). The flow of refugees increased after the failed Ilinden-Preobraschenie uprising and the Balkan Wars (1912-13). During this time, some families also settled in the Tschiflik "Archijanli".

At the beginning of the 1920s there were already around 100 refugee families, most of whom came from Feres , Soufli and Uzunköprü in what is now East and West Thrace . In 1928, parcels of land from the former Tschiflik were distributed to each refugee family by the refugee commission of the Burgas municipality. On July 14th of the same year, the Central Refugee Commission decided to build houses for the refugees here, which were completed in 1930. By order 162, the former Tschiflik "Archijanli" became the village of Twarditsa. The school was built in 1934.

Worth seeing

Until the Bulgarian communists took power in 1945, the fair (a kind of folk festival ) took place on September 21. After the democratization of the country in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the old tradition was revived, but the festival has been held on September 8th ever since. In addition to the typical costumes, delicacies from the home regions of the former refugees can also be enjoyed at the festival.
