The U12 line is the temporary name of an alternative line to the Berlin U-Bahn . It corresponds to the original line B I , which was designated as Line 1 from 1966 and as U1 from 1984, but whose eastern end point after the construction of the Berlin Wall was the Schlesisches Tor station and not the Warschauer Brücke underground station .

Under the name U12, the line is only operated temporarily for various reasons. From 1993 to June 2003 it was used as a major event and night transport line, later it was only used at times as far as the Olympia-Stadion underground station . A few years later it was operated under this name again due to construction work on the U2 line.

Lines

The U12 runs over the Kreuzberg section of the U1 line from its eastern terminus at Warschauer Straße (from Schlesisches Tor until October 1995) to the Wittenbergplatz transfer station , where it changes to the route of the U2 line to its western terminus in Ruhleben . By using the sections of lines U1 and U2, the line number U12 comes about.

origin

From November 1956, there were no more trains running continuously from Pankow to Ruhleben, because line A I was shortened to today's Theodor-Heuss-Platz and a new line called AB I was installed, which was called line B I from May 1957 . Coming from Ruhleben, this changed behind the Wittenbergplatz underground station to the relief route via the Kurfürstenstrasse station in the direction of Warschauer Brücke .

In 1966 this became the well-known Line 1, after which the musical of the same name is named and whose action takes place on this line. From 1984 to 1993 it was called 'Line U1'.

From August 13, 1961 to November 13, 1993, its eastern end point was the Schlesisches Tor underground station in the West Berlin district of Kreuzberg due to the separation of the route through the construction of the Wall . After German reunification , the connection between the Warschauer Straße and Schlesisches Tor underground stations was reopened in October 1995. Now the lines U1 (from Krumme Lanke ), U12 (from Ruhleben) and U15 (from Uhlandstraße ) led to Warschauer Straße.

Construction line

On August 18, 2006, the U12 line was temporarily set up again as a replacement for the U2 on the route between Gleisdreieck and Ruhleben, as no train traffic was possible until March 18, 2007 due to bridge construction between Gleisdreieck and Bülowstraße . The U12 line ran between Ruhleben and Warschauer Strasse on the historic route of the former U1 line. Trains from the HK , A3L / 67/71/82/92, A3E, GI / 1 and GI / 1E series were used.

The same took place around five years later from June 24th to December 8th, 2011 because renovation work on the U2 underground line at Gleisdreieck station made it necessary to split the line. However, the U12 was only set up after protests by various passenger associations. Before that, it was necessary to change trains twice between lines U1 and U2, the U2 ended westwards at Gleisdreieck and eastwards at Wittenbergplatz.

The line was put back into operation between April 16, 2015 and November 23, 2015, when construction work on the U2 line continued after a two-year break.

From June 29, 2020, the line was again put into operation for seven weeks due to construction work on the route between Kottbusser Tor via Wittenbergplatz to Ruhleben.
