U 17 ( vessel identification S 196) was a German submarine of the class 206 A . It wasstationedwith the 3rd submarine squadron of the German Navy in Eckernförde .

history

U 17 entered service in 1974. On September 18, 1989, Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft began converting to the improved class 206 A.

In the summer of 2010, the U17 took part in the NATO operation Active Endeavor in the Mediterranean .

U 17 was decommissioned on December 14, 2010 . The boat is now in the naval arsenal in Wilhelmshaven .

Sponsorship

In 1973 the community of Kressbronn on Lake Constance took over the sponsorship of the submarine.
