The Uelzen Open R is a music festival that has been held annually on the Albrecht Thear site in the Hanseatic city of Uelzen since 2008, except in 2011 . Since 2016 the name of the event has been given the addition "Festival". It is only promoted on the event's posters with Open R Festival.
history
First festival
In 2008 Ulrich Gustävel organized the first Uelzen Open R. In front of over 30,000 spectators, among others, Die Ärzte , Mando Diao and the Sportfreunde Stiller performed.
2009 to 2011 - the early years
Due to the success of the first Uelzen Open R, the organizer Ulrich Gustävel and his team decided to set up an annual festival in Uelzen. The event was first advertised as the Uelzen Open R in 2009. Acts included Amy McDonald , Silbermond , Jan Delay and Samy Deluxe . With fewer than 10,000 spectators, however, the renewed success failed to materialize. Nevertheless, the organizing team decided to hold a festival in 2010 as well. Die Fantastischen Vier , Stanfour , Culcha Candela , Ich + Ich and Eisblume were engaged . Because the success with 10,000 visitors failed again and the planned act for 2011, Brian Adams , canceled, no Uelzen Open R took place in 2011.
2012 to 2015 - new concept
In order to continue the festival, the organizers decided on a new concept in 2012: an arena with grandstands was built on the Albrecht-Thear site and the Almased company was won as a sponsor. In this way, funding could be secured even if the number of viewers was low. In 2012 Herbert Grönemeyer and Die Orsons performed in Uelzen, in 2013 Die Ärzte came again and played together with Kraftklub and Bonaparte in front of over 20,000 spectators. In 2014, the Open R extended over two days for the first time. On the first day BossHoss and Bosse were on stage, while on the second day Die Höhner , Voxxclub and Santiano got together . In 2015 Peter Maffay performed in Uelzen.
Since 2016 - international business
In 2016 the festival was extended to three days. With Elton John , a world star came to the Hanseatic city for the first time. Furthermore, Foy Vance (as support for Elton John), Mark Forster , Roland Kaiser , Glasperlenspiel , Namika , Johannes Oerding , Maite Kelly and Lot were on stage. A total of almost 30,000 visitors found their way to the festival site. The third and last day of the Open R 2016 took place with Roland Kaiser and Maite Kelly and was not organized by Ulrich Gustävel, but by Uelzener Ferienwelt.
For the festival in August 2017, Bob Geldof, Robin Schulz, Jonas Blue, Feder, Rea Garvey, Silbermond and Max Giesinger have been announced. On April 7th, 2017 it was announced that Sting will also perform, which is why the start of the festival has been brought forward to August 1st.
The organizer of the OPEN R FESTIVAL - Ulrich Gustävel - has been working together with Uelzener Ferienwelt GmbH & Co. KG for several years. In the past, the OPEN R FESTIVAL with Roland Kaiser (2016) and the OPEN R FESTIVAL "House & Club" 2017 were organized together.

particularities
With the appearance of Elton John, the Uelzen Open R 2016 experienced a large media presence for the first time. Several television stations reported live from the festival.
