The Verkhoyansky District ( Russian Верхоянский улус even район Верхоянский , Werchojanski rayon; Yakut Үөһээ Дьааҥы улууһа , Üöhee Džaangy uluuha ) is one of 34 Ulusse ( Rajons ) of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in the north of the Russian Federal District Far East . It is located on the Arctic Circle and a little northeast of the center of the republic inland, south of Ust-Janski ulus .

The Ulus has an area of ​​around 134,100 km², more than Bavaria , Baden-Württemberg and Hesse combined. It belongs to the East Siberian mountain region and includes the entire upper catchment area of the Jana .

The vegetation consists of taiga in protected areas in the south , and tundra in high altitudes and in the north up to the valleys .

Demographics

The population began to rise earlier than in parts of the republic further northeast, but then remained relatively constant until 1990. Due to the emigration from the neighboring Ulussen since the end of the Soviet Union, it is now below the value of 1959:

The ulus consists of 17 municipalities, referred to as nasleg in the Sakha Republic , it is the city of Verkhoyansk, two urban-type settlements , including the district seat and 14 rural municipalities.
