Around the world with Willy Fog (Spanish: La vuelta al mundo de Willy Fog ; Japanese: ア ニ メ 80 日間 世界 一周 Anime Hachijū Nichikan Sekai Isshū ) is a 26-episode animated cartoon series produced by BRB Internacional in 1981 and animated by Nippon Animation based on the novel Journey around the Earth in 80 Days by Jules Verne . In contrast to the novel, the characters are embodied here by animals. The series was continued with Willy Fog 2 ( With Willy Fog to the center of the earth and Willy Fog on the trail of the Nautilus ).

action

The English businessman Willy Fog bet with the unfriendly banker Sullivan and three other members of a gentleman’s club for 20,000 British pounds, half of his fortune, that he can circumnavigate the world in 80 days and exactly before the deadline on December 21, 1872 Arrives back at the London club at 8:45 pm. His faithful servant Rigodon and his friend Tico should accompany him. But of course not everything goes so smoothly, especially since Sullivan wants to help fate a bit through his assistant Transfer so that Willy Fog loses his bet. Inspector Dix and his assistant Bully also make life difficult for Willy Fog, because they too travel after him and even leave the European continent with him from Brindisi and follow Fog on through the newly built Suez Canal . From Bombay via Puranpur you have to recognize that the route is not yet developed. The Mahut is struck down by Transfer and our friends are now riding an elephant through the jungle. After Transfer disappears one night, our friends can save an Indian princess from the stake (see widow burning ) and ride with her to Allahabad . The princess wants to accompany our friends because she has relatives in Singapore . First they have to go to court in Calcutta because Tico and Ricodon disregarded a sacred cow at the temple in India . However, Willy Fog provides the bail and they can travel on together. In Yokohama Ricodon and Tico get into a circus as acrobats . They are recognized by Willy Fog and together they can, with the help of a pirate, get on the steamship General Grant and then continue to Hawaii . You have to let the current steer you to Tijuana and in order not to lose two weeks, Fog buys a new invention - a hot-air balloon , with which he manages to fly to San Francisco . With the Union Pacific Railroad (train), Willy Fog manages to intervene despite transfers (including a herd of bison and sawing a bridge) and through attacks by Indians to Fort Phil Kearny , a small stop. From here we take a railroad trolley and a stagecoach to Omaha and then a train to Chicago , the departure being delayed by a snow storm . You get to a burned-out city (see: Great Fire of Chicago ) and with a sailing sleigh to the frozen Lake Michigan . A place-name sign shows the city of Detroit until they finally have to cross Niagara Falls and miss their ship to England in Buffalo .

In the end, Willy Fog still manages to arrive in Liverpool after 80 days using all of his fortune, where he is arrested because he was mistaken for a bank robber. This costs him enough time that he missed the train to London. He can still secure the trip on a freight train, but arrives in London five minutes late. The following day, he and Princess Romy, who was rescued on his journey, decide on their wedding. His servant Rigodon learns from a Reverend that Fog actually arrived on December 20th. Regardless of this, it also becomes clear to Fog that he gained four minutes at each degree of longitude on the journey east, making a whole day in total. In this way he manages to arrive at the club on time and win the bet. The story ends with Fog and Princess Romy's marriage on December 22nd.
