The Disappeared Child is a German TV film based on a script by Daniel Schwarz and Thomas Schwebel and directed by Judith Kennel from 2015. It is the tenth episode of the crime series Under Other Circumstances with Natalia Wörner in the lead role.

action

The night after his eighth birthday, Sascha Witte disappears from his children's room. For Commissioner Jana Winter it is not clear that the boy was kidnapped. Because of the difficult circumstances in which he grew up, he could just have run away. The unstable and single mother suspects Sascha's father, Jürgen Lohmann, who has a criminal record and at the time had violated Sascha's older brother Marius, who then became behaviorally abnormal and currently lives in a youth home.

After a dead boy is found in a playground, everyone assumes that only Sascha can be the victim. Only later it turns out that this child is not the missing Sascha, but looks very much like him. The child was suffocated and has demonstrably resisted. The perpetrator could be convicted on the basis of DNA adhesions if he is found.

Jürgen Lohmann notices that the police are looking for him and goes into hiding. When found, he denies having anything to do with his son's disappearance. He would also have an alibi because someone hit him in the car that night. However, he did not know who, because he was given a thousand euros as compensation and the police were not called. When checking his information, the investigators discover that their boss, Brauner, was the opponent of the accident.

The dead boy in the playground can be identified and was abducted three days before his death. Therefore, the investigators hope to find Sascha still alive. Jana Winter now discovers something unusual about Sascha's uncle on the birthday video. She confronts his wife with her suspicion and thus learns that Andreas Krohn is a pedophile . On the other hand, since he is taking hormones, she thinks the problem would have been under control.

The police arrest Andreas Krohn when he is being threatened by Sascha's brother Marius. Marius had hidden Sascha from his uncle because he too had noticed that his little brother was in danger. At the age of eight he was also harassed by his uncle, which he wanted to spare Sascha.

Reviews

Volker Bergmeister from Tittelbach.tv wrote: “'Under other circumstances - The disappeared child' is a dense, intense crime drama, told very emotionally and its look is reminiscent of Scandinavian crime novels. The discovery of a family secret is, however, predictable and - despite the flying camera over the northern German landscape - the film is staged conventionally. "

Ulrich Feld wrote at the Frankfurter Neue Presse : “Director Judith Kennel relies on long-acting scenes and the gray melancholy of cold winter days. The actors do their job very well too. It's also nice that the crime thriller touches on the subject of loyalty among colleagues. With a little more logic, the film could have been really good. So what was left [despite the logic errors] was a visually captivating TV thriller. "

At the FAZ , Matthias Hannemann judged: “'The disappeared child' relies on a story that television has played through so often that one hardly likes to watch it, [but] is as coherent as in the tenth case about Jana Winter […] that rarely happens. ”“ ZDF couldn't have delivered a better film for the small anniversary of the Jana Winter series. ”

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm also rated it positively and wrote: "Solidly crafted crime fodder."

Ulrich Feld described possible logic errors in the plot:

“First, why does a child murderer bury the body in the sandpit of a playground, where it is guaranteed to be found particularly quickly? Second: If Marius wanted to protect his little brother from his uncle, why did he hide the child awkwardly and even get a pistol and not just go to the police? He could also have revealed himself to the police officers who wanted to interrogate him. "

- Ulrich Feld, Frankfurter Neue Presse , April 14, 2015
