history

Mining was carried out in the Unterlaussa valley for around 800 years. After the beginning of the Second World War, the United Aluminum Works AG  (VAW) reactivated the old bauxite mining for the aircraft industry north of the town (on Blahberg in the Reichraminger Hintergebirge).

The mining settlement of Weißwasser was built near the remote mine . To transport the raw material away, a 14 km long material ropeway was built to the Weißenbach-St. Gallen in the Ennstal. The bauxite was brought to Schwandorf / Bavaria by train to produce clay from it. This clay was then transported to the Mattigwerk in Ranshofen . The aluminum was then melted from this alumina in the electrolysis process.

After the end of the war, mining continued until 1964. The drop in prices on the international raw materials market forced the VAW's successor at that time, the United Metalworks Ranshofen-Berndorf  (VMW), to close bauxite mining. The mining facilities were dismantled and torn down, the material ropeway dismantled and the Weißwasser settlement abandoned. The former mining area is now in the Kalkalpen National Park .

As a result, there was a strong migration from Unterlaussa, which continues to this day. From once more than a thousand inhabitants, the population sank to 220 people who currently (2008) have their main residence in Unterlaussa.

The local area is of some tourist importance as a hiking region with numerous alpine pastures. There are also a variety of hiking, climbing and cycling tours.

Culture and sights

Parish church Unterlaussa

Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The first evidence of a small church in Unterlaussa can be found as early as 1790. On May 1, 1872, a small chapel was finally consecrated, which stood about 50 meters upstream from the current church. Between 1906 and 1908, today's small neo-Gothic parish church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built as a subsidiary church of St. Gallen; the interior decoration took place in the years up to 1915.

In 1966 Unterlaussa was finally separated from Sankt Gallen and made an independent parish. In 2006 the church was completely renovated inside.

Mining Museum Knappenhaus

The so-called miner's house was rebuilt faithfully on the model of a building that served on Blaberg in 1000 m above sea level, the workers of the bauxite mine to 1964 as a base and shelter. Today the miner's house houses an exhibition about the former mining in Unterlaussa. It shows the mining past of mining, the route from the raw material, the extraction, transport of the bauxite, processing to the end product aluminum.

Club house Unterlaussa

Together with the Unterlaussa volunteer fire brigade , the local associations built a new clubhouse as an event and cultural center in 2006/07.
