Submission is a German television film with elements of a play from 2018 . It is based on the German novel Subjugation by Michel Houellebecq .

action

François is a university professor in Paris. Over time, everything has become indifferent to him, profession, politics, religion - his fellow human beings. He is a connoisseur of 19th century French literature, is the cynical anti-hero, cold, self-centered, repulsive. After losing his job, he is offered an offer to teach at the Sorbonne Université , but he can only accept this teaching position if he converts to Islam, as the last political elections have brought about Islamic changes in society. François thinks about what his life and that of society would look like in the future.

background

The film was produced by Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg . Titus Selge's script is based on Michel Houellebecq's 2015 novel and Karin Beier's stage monologue based on the novel. Edgar Selge , who performed the monologue at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, also plays the leading role in the film. The film combines conventional film scenes with excerpts from the monologue. The theater scenes were recorded in July 2017, and shooting for the rest of the film began on October 10, 2017 with recordings in Paris and Berlin.

On the day that Michel Houellebecq's novel “Submission” was published, a nightmare came true in Paris: Islamist assassins stormed the editors of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and murdered twelve people. Houellebecq, who was featured as an oracle in the current issue of the magazine, then went into hiding for days for security reasons. His novel looked like the anticipation of real horror.

Charisma

The German first broadcast took place on June 6, 2018, followed by a discussion of the Maischberger talk on the subject of the film. The audience ratings were just 1.92 million viewers and 7.4 percent of the total audience below the broadcaster average. In the target group of 14 to 49 year olds, the film only achieved 5.0 percent.

Publications

The film was released on DVD on June 8, 2018 by Studio Hamburg Enterprises and has been streamed via Netflix since January 1, 2019.

Reviews

Ursula Scheer wrote for the FAZ : “She wrote a two-and-a-half-hour monologue for the first-person narrator of the novel, the shallow worthlessness, senselessness and aimlessness between loves, reading and alcohol, who Edgar Selge furiosly wrote a two-and-a-half hour monologue filled with life. ”With a text that contains“ sentences overflowing with life weariness, cynicism, black humor, irony and dystopian horror ”, Edgar Selge“ shines as the main character. Islam plays a minor role ”.

Thomas Geringer judged for tittelbach.tv : “The self-deprecating one-man show by Edgar Selge and the lively interlacing of literature, theater and film: This is how the provocative dystopia of 'submission' becomes a multi-layered television film with its own accents. That the Hamburg G20 riots are included, however, is not entirely convincing. "

At zeit.de , Matthias Dell criticized: “After just three minutes, one of the self-referentials' mummies becomes stale for the first time. The real-theater-in-film trick turns out to be a PR stunt: Submission as a film doesn't want anything from submission as a Hamburg theater play, except to advertise it. "" From the fear-driven lust for the horror scenario in the book yes, it isn't, after the theater, ARD is now creating its 'theme evening'. The willingness with which public service television promotes those emotion-based scare tactics that actually fall within the portfolio of the AfD and its right-wing radical friends is amazing. "

Wolfgang Höbel evaluates for spiegel.de : "Sometimes this film looks as if German television turned a politically rebellious novel into a romantic comedy." "Sometimes the film [...] also looks as if the ARD has decidedly want to tinker an apocalypse thriller. "" Because stage monologues are not very suitable as film material, the director Titus Selge enriches the stage excerpts [...] with many very Parisian play scenes and French chansons. "" The film is nice to watch now - and yet a trivialization of the wicked Houellebecq black painting "and a" half-baked result. "
