Josef Goller
Josef Goller (born January 25, 1868 in Dachau , † May 29, 1947 in Obermenzing ) was a German glass painter and graphic artist .
Life
After an apprenticeship as a glass painter at the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt, Josef Goller attended evening courses at the Munich School of Applied Arts . From 1887 to 1890 he was employed in an art glass workshop in Zittau . He then took over the artistic direction of the institute for glass painting from Bruno Urban in Dresden (later Urban & Goller ). They realized the designs of well-known painters, including the church window in the Michaeliskirche in Leipzig by Ludwig Otto and a church window in the Trebsen city church on behalf of a foundation of the Anton Wiede family .
In 1905, Goller took part in the competition for advertising designs for joint advertising by Ludwig Stollwerck and Otto Henkell . His design was recommended by the judges for purchase for 200 marks. From 1906 to 1928, from 1909 as professor, he headed the class for glass painting at the Dresden School of Applied Arts , where Otto Griebel and Oskar Fritz Beier were among his most famous students. Later he also increasingly turned to book art and poster design . Here u belonged. a. Kurt Fiedler to his students.
Goller was a member of the German Werkbund and belonged to the artist group Die Elbier , for which he had created the landmark, a ship on moving waves. Arno Drescher , later professor and director of the State Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Industry in Leipzig , was his son-in-law.

Goller is considered an important representative of Art Nouveau . The painting of American opalescent glasses was one of his specialties . In Saxony he created many stained glass for windows in town halls, schools, churches and train stations, for example for the reception room of the Leipzig main train station , and four windows for the registry office of the Nuremberg town hall . There is also work in the Radebeul town hall .
In and around Dresden he mainly worked for churches, for example the garrison church St. Martin , the Marienkirche Cotta and the Luther church Radebeul , as well as for the Görlitz synagogue . The windows of the now destroyed Imperial Palace , glass windows with signs of the zodiac in the Loschwitz School and the redesign of the foyer of the Semper Opera House from 1912 were also made by Goller. He also carried out commissions for the Dresden Zoo and the New Town Hall . The mosaic Christ, Way, Truth and Life at the entrance portal of the Bischofswerdaer Christ Church created Goller 1907 together with Villeroy & Boch .
In Chemnitz, black and gold frames for the Ratskeller, a Bacchus painting in the Ratsherrentrinkstube and works in the Chemnitz-Siegmar Middle School and the Chemnitz-Euba Church have been preserved. Twelve historical pictures in the shape of a coat of arms with floral and culinary motifs were used again in 2005 in the New Town Hall of Chemnitz . He designed the ceiling skylight in the library of Waldenburg Castle. The wall paintings and mosaic pictures in the Crimmitschauer Johanniskirche are no longer preserved.
As a graphic artist, lithography was his specialty. He maintained close relationships with the book artists Peter Behrens and Johann Vincenz Cissarz . His caricature posters, which are now in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, are reminiscent of Edmund Edel in their design . In his later years he was repeatedly represented with oil paintings at Dresden art exhibitions in the art gallery in the Lipsius building on Brühl's terrace .
