Before the 2015 territorial reform, Vatuvou had an area of 53.24 km². Now there are 51.89 km². The Suco is located in the northeast of the Maubara administrative office. To the west are the Sucos Vaviquinia and Maubaralissa and south of the Suco Lissadila . In the east and south-east, Vatuvou borders the administrative office of Liquiçá with its Sucos Dato , Hatuquessi and Leotala . In the north lies the Sawu Sea . The Manobira River rises in the southeast in the border area to Hatuquessi . It follows the border to the south, making it the only Sucos river that belongs to the Lóis system . All other rivers in Vatuvou flow north into the Sawu Sea. These are the palua , the malukai, and the palapu . To the west of the Palua, near the coast, lies the salty Maubara lake . The approximately eight hectare lake is an important habitat for a large number of bird species. Particularly interesting is the black Timor pigeon , which can be seen here regularly in the forest on the edge of the lake and in the hills that are up to 500 m high. An area of 2000 hectares around the lake with tropical dry forests is an Important Bird Area .
The village of Raeme is located between Lake Maubara and Palua , through which the northern coastal road also runs, one of the country's most important traffic routes. The town of Samanaru ( Samanaro ) is located on it in the west and the town of Vatu-Nau ( Vatunao ) in the east . Between the rivers Malukai and Palapu lies the village of Tolema , east of the Palapu the villages of Hataulete , Katnaulete and Vitanau . To the west of the Palua there is another village called Samanaru near the center and further east another place called Raeme and the village of Hatunau . In the south-east of Vatuvou there are also the villages of Lauelau ( Lauclau ), Gariana and Leva, which is partly in Leotala, and in the south-west the places Lebulema , a third Samanaru , Lissalara ( Lisalara ), Bouraevei ( Bourawe , Bourawei ) and Melabua . There are primary schools in Gariana, Samanaru (north) and Lissalara.
In the Suco there are the ten Aldeias Bouraevei , Gariana , Lebucailiti , Lissa-Ico , Lissalara , Manuquibia , Mau-Ubu , Raeme , Samanaru and Vatu-Nau .

history
In 1999, pro-Indonesian militias ( Wanra ) tried to use force to influence the mood ahead of the August 30 independence referendum . On February 15, the Besi Merah Putih (BMP) militia attacked Vatuvou and Guiço . Vatuvou became a ghost town . The inhabitants fled to Sare ( Ermera municipality ). Up to 6000 refugees gathered there alone and stayed until the INTERFET arrived in September 1999. Almost 2700 refugees from Vatuvou and Maubara gathered in March in Gariana, 375 with the Carmelite nuns in Lissadila.
The remains of about a dozen victims of the Liquiçá church massacre were recovered from Lake Maubara in 1999 by Australian naval divers. Members of pro-Indonesian militias and the Indonesian military sank the bodies in the lake.
